I promise y’all: marching in step is quite easy. Nothing difficult about it. That bad marching was intentional. I guarantee it.
I promise y’all: marching in step is quite easy. Nothing difficult about it. That bad marching was intentional. I guarantee it.
It was noticeable !
I wondered about that. Very sloppy. 😁
I noticed and nodded to that!!!
Do you have any idea how difficult it is to train that many soldiers to mosey out of sync? 🤣
"mosey" is the perfect description for what they were doing. if they had been walking by stores, I would have called it "window shopping".
from Barry Gander's substack barrygander.substack.com/p/the-army-i...
🤣
Exactly.
I don’t know what I’ve been told Rump is foolish and really old. Sound off 1-2-3! 😗
Trump wanted some goosesteppers
This thread is A plus 🙌🏾
ohhhhh I truly hope so 😈😈😈
I thought they were just embarrassed to be there and not making the effort, but I love them doing it on purpose.
I keep thinking about the humiliation of being forced to perform for a draft dodger who displays such contempt for people who have put their lives on the line for the country. Seems only natural that they would find ways to fight back.
Yup. You're 100% correct. It comes naturally after a while. You're in step unconsciously. I led my platoon when I was in basic, I was the cadence caller. That was a subtle FU to Trump.
I’ve seen high school marching bands look more professional than this.
Exactly! They showed up & and knew the assignment! 👏👏👏
At best lazy. There was music, hence a beat to march to.
I read that they were supposed to get a 3 day weekend off, which danger yam cancelled for his little 'perade'; so no doubt they were over the whole mess.
Lol, Danger Yam
💯 🤣
I thought so. They were pissed.
I saw a video of the troops rehearsing and they looked brilliant. Totally in step and engaged. Absolutely different from how they turned out yesterday. Maybe deliberate pass-agg or exhaustion or both but lots of people have commented on the sloppiness of the parade.
it must be very strange for someone proud of their military service to be required to march to John Fogerty's song, Fortunate Son; a veteran, Fogerty wrote it to satirize draft dodging by the rich. Like a teen walking into a new school and hearing Pink Floyd's "Education" over the speakers.
I am going to have to check out that song. Kudos to whoever chose it (either deliberately or inadvertently because they liked the title!)
I was wondering the same.
I had the same suspicion. There is NO way ALL of them were that bad lmao.
I’m thankful to the service members. So grateful. 🥹
I noticed too. I've seen better marching from small town high school bands
I got that vibe too. They were all over the place.
I was thinking the same thing.
That’s a great sign for our democracy!! Not goose stepping to the Fascistic regime.
Drill and cerimony is taught in basic. Its done all the time when your in uniform. They have a special way to count steps to keep on pace and a specific distance your feet should go apart.
I don’t know much about the military but do know folk are trained and trained to ensure they do right.
I think Trump was hoping the troops would all be wearing their Class A uniforms. He wanted a show and instead got Beetle Bailey at the end of a 20 mile hike.
My (veteran) husband doesn’t like me referring to those camo fatigues as “pajamas,” but honestly when they posted all these guys in NYC’s Grand Central Station post-9/11 that’s what they looked like. Camo to blend in with white-collar commuters in coat & tie? 🙄
We did it in big parades back in Boy Scouts. Looked way snappier than whatever that was yesterday.
I can still march off a perfect 5 yards in eight steps from my high school marching band days.
Same. I saw someone say that it was the wrong kind of music for keeping in step. Umm, that's not a thing?
100%! I was color guard in a drum corps. We were much more put together, despite day drinking.
Best response of this thread. 😄
My granddaughter’s rotc does better
Our Jr High band was more impressive
Yes. I was in high school marching band and you had to be not just in step, but perfectly aligned horizontally, vertically and diagonally. And we did it while playing our instruments
Ditto that!! We had to have our music memorized, and our director loved pin wheels! His motto was "No pain, No gain"
Same here & as a Jr. High & High School marching band clarinet player at a US DOD school in Germany, we were constantly competing for first chair at every performance. I can proudly say I was first chair and I’d be damned if I was gonna lose my spot!
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Yard!
Amen, Mr. Fallows. Amen.
It was a FU to DJT!
All while the real king had uniformed cavalry band riding thru the streets playing ditties.
If the ground is wet, you give a quick-time march for safety.
It’s the first thing I learned in Navy boot camp. Formation followed by the order dress right dress to ensure your line was straight. You also learned how to change your step if you were out of step. Intentional or not, it was bad optics for the Army.
Right!?
You learn that in boot camp the hard way. You don’t forget it unless you try
I was in marching band in high school. We had to march in step, doing complex formations on the field, while playing our instruments. It honestly wasn't that hard.
Yeah, you look at military dictator parades of yore and you have literally thousands of soldiers marching in perfect lock-step. None of these Army guys wanted to be at Trump's "PERADE".
They certainly would have been better at dancing around.
I watched three minutes of it and thought the same. That was either their first few days in basic, they were drunk or it was on purpose.
Former military here. I would agree. I suspect that they pulled together a great number of truck drivers, office staff, cooks and other non-combatants to fill those uniforms.
Yep They understood the assignment
Yep, I noticed that right away! Especially if you’re marching in front of a VIP, you’re going to have your best military bearing. I was on my Navy A school drill team and loved performing, trust me, this was 100% intentional.
Agree
On Saturday morning (European time), I watched the British trooping the colour, precision at its best. If you want to see marching in step, look at the sky coverage of trooping the colour, no tanks, just style, precision and immaculate turn out..
I hope it was the troops form of protest.
Yep. Marching was the easiest thing to do during basic training.
Had to be. They all looked embarrassed to be there.
It was around 90 degrees here yesterday. Was it bad marching or just walking because of the heat?
They’ve trained in worse conditions. Take that vets word for it.
Yeah, but this isn’t training or anything else even remotely near it, it’s a dog and pony show. You can take this vet’s word for the fact that while marching is a fundamental part of military training and discipline, it's not an absolute requirement in all situations.
Hundred percent agree and trying to keep step to Creedence, I'm not sure I could do that.
Right, not the right music for marching in lock step. They had to use Rout Step - walking or whatever step was appropriate for the conditions.
They hate him too.
The silence of the tracks. www.youtube.com/watch?v=e001...
Someone's head is gonna roll for the squeaky tanks. I vote for Pete Hegseth's. He looked like a little boy who knew he was going to be taken out to the woodshed and punished! Either that or he was hungover 🤣
Makes me remember the marching cadence in bootcamp 40 years ago..."your left, your left, your left, right, left."
Maybe easy for you, but I got kicked out of marching band 🥲
I thought that, too. The military morale is reportedly really low right now.
It looked very desultory. I was wondering.
More of a saunter
Any time I see something about marching I still hear my TI's voice, almost 40 years after I was in BMT. MARCH FROM THE WAIST DOWN 😸
Thought the same. I’ve seen plenty as child of vet and parent of an active duty. That had FU written all over it.
bsky.app/profile/goli...
Well played 👏👏👏👍
I wanted to read on. What did the resident do with his boat? :D
🤣 This just happened within the past year or two, right? Not passive aggressive at all! /s 🤣
sorry no pics but, bank complained about old cars in driveway and forced owner to put up fence, he did out of scrap lumber various lengths and widths and proceeded to paint it red and then covered it with anti bank graffiti, pretty ugly but in compliance
I think ,IIRC, he put a fence up to cover the boat so it was technically concealed as requested. The top half of the boat could be seen, but the he painted the bottom half on the fence itself, so it still looked like the full boat was out in the open. No rules about fence painting. 🤭
My husband was briefly in the Army more than thirty years ago. I guarantee that he could could still fall into step right now.
Absolutely! They were not in-step, which spoke loud and clear. 👏👏💙
I noticed. No one calling cadence
I believe you (always). But why?
Yep
They were dragging ass
Hmmm... so basically Trump's big beautiful "perade" was really just another No Kings protest in disguise?
Yup those soldiers were aware of "No Kings" and they did their part to join the protest in a way with the bad marching and the choice of marching music..loved how well they pulled that off!
Love it!
The freshman did far better than that by noon on the first day of band camp.
I believe you. Thank you for telling it like it is.
Marching well requires 'Give a shit' factor. These soldiers did NOT Give A Shit!
I had the same thought. That did not appear to be marching “with pride”!
the 1,000s of marchers were on the beat at last week's Pride Parade in DC 🌈
Yep!
I was able to do it in the high school drum & bugle corps, so you know it's gotta be easy. 🤷♀️🤷♀️
Absolutely!!!!
That’s nice to know ☺️.
Boy I hope that is right
Nice. Nice!
I want to know who thought playing Fortunate Son was a good idea…unless the Army chose it. Which would mean they were trolling dump…
I’m sure some DOGE incel heard it in a Vietnam movie and thought it would be cool.
They really played Fortunate Son?? lol.
bsky.app/profile/bubb...
If I was Neil Young, I would think about complaining for a second but the irony is too rich, so I might just enjoy the moment. Public service announcement: folks, please listen to the lyrics before using music for your parade.
Definitely not marching in sync from top to bottom! 🤣
Yes. It was blaring.
That song has been played many times at Trump rallies. I think Trump is doing it to mock the military. Rubbing the faces that he was privileged and did not have to serve..
He really should listen to the words. That song doesn't say what he thinks it does. 😀
I didn't watch the parade, but I find this very interesting.
No way that's hilarious 🤣
For some insane reason not the first time it’s been used at a right wing/ fascist event. That and Springsteen ‘s “Born in the USA” keep coming up. It’s mind boggling. Also I remember “Power and Glory” by Phil Ochs used at a Reagan rally. Crazy.
He’s been playing that song for years because he only knows the chorus and wants to give the impression of being a regular guy, not a “fortunate son.” Which, of course, is a lie like everything he says.
I think all he hears in that song is "the band plays 'Hail to the Chief'"
I was wondering if maybe that was the case. We've all seen our military march before, they do know how.
It really did look exaggerated and deliberately bad.
'Yeah, I'm just having fun only technically following orders...'
I thought the same.
Ahh I noticed that yesterday. I told my husband what's going, on these guys are it in sync!
You noticed that also - have high school ROTC do better.
www.pbs.org/newshour/pol...
Now felon47 is saying the parade was for Flag Day (and not his birthday, or the Army's 250th Anniversary). 🐂💩
Protests come in many ways. I've seen many a military parade (4th of July) and these soldiers today were intentionally showing their displeasure with the regime.
I applaud it.
I thought that too. Good. It shows that while they had to physically be there, they didn't have to agree with it. A good sign.
My Army vet husband and my friend who is currently in the Army both said that when they watched the videos.
Sergeant Spriggs woulda gone ballistic on us if we’d marched like that.
Absofreakinglutely. Every year I taught my gr9 drama classes to do it in 15 mins.🤣😆😂👍
Not just the outofsteppitude, but their general bearing and deportment. Sauntering in formation.
Excellent content: “outofsteppitude,” “sauntering in formation.” Kudos to you, sir (and the troops).
Haha I noticed too. What Trump fantasized was high precision high kick marching for dear leader aka North Korea. He did not get that!!!
Thank you! Never in the military, but when I saw the video, the first thing I thought was, "This isn't the normal way they march." Glad to know it might have been their way to protest. I feel sorry for the ones who didn't want to be there (hopefully the majority).
I’m certain it was a clear representation of the lack of moral that has been spreading like a bad cold throughout a military that’s been stripped of its honor in leadership and example by this administration.
the marching had the intensity of hungry soldiers headed to chow.
Thank you for confirming what I suspected! I know it's not the military but I did marching band & know good marching when I see it. Yesterday, soldiers were even slouching, bodies a little too relaxed, slightly off rhythm, almost sauntering a little. I figured it was their quiet resistance.
Out for a Saturday stroll with their unit.
Agreed. It takes brand new recruits a couple of days MAXIMUM to master marching in time. #maliciouscompliance
I had to actually MARCH in the USAF. We were ordered to be IN STEP. Or were loudly chastised by our Sgt. That was the sloppiest shit I ever saw. Maybe PAID ACTORS ?
Nope. Malicious Compliance. They had to be there and wanted no part of this.
I loved it Minimum effort Malicious compliance making them work when all the rest of the military has a holiday weekend, graduations, fathers day Making them sleep in parking garages and not paying them It was perfect
Reminds me of quiet quitting
Why pay actors when you can order solders to do it for “free”
It’s the first thing you learn in boot camp and you do it every day in boot camp - every branch. 40 yrs later, I still know how to change step, maintain spacing, turn, etc. It can be more difficult to be out of step - stepping on heels of others. A choice was made here.
Yup, you get off the bus and right on the painted footsteps then the receiving D.I. teaches how to march right then and there.
The military knows this "perade" wasn't for them and it wasn't even for their country, but a stupid stunt for an insufferable narcissist
🤭
This has to be true. That was not a parade. It was a lazy unimpressive performance. Nobody except Trump wanted to be there.
As soon as I saw they were in BDUs, I knew. Good on 'em. Now if we can get them to stand down in communities, we'd be much better off.
Will Hegseth be fired this week? Or will Trump wake up from his nap and decide the parade was the Biggest, Best Parade Anyone Has Ever Seen? Whoever planned this parade was brilliant.
I love it. Resistance in whatever small way they can...
It's really not. I learned in high school band and then took that experience into the Navy. youtu.be/zTHms1PoOLY
I love this so much.
As was the squeaking of the tanks. Don't FA with the military.
bsky.app/profile/oasi...
My father was a career Army infantry officer (and Army advisor to the 442nd during the 50s in Hawai’i) and he would be horrified by such sloppy marching. They don’t even stand up straight! What happened to military posture?
My father was career Army. I’ve been to many military parades. I’ve never seen less comportment in my life. It had to be deliberate.
Good armies don't march.
Resistance apparently.
I wondered.
Thanks for the explanation!! We marched in better step in marching band in grade school!
A silent protest
It is... our soldiers can tight in procession never miss a step. It was intentional
Their version of a hand unicorn 🖕? 😂
Hand unicorn is cracking me up! Never heard the middle finger called that. 🤣😂
Me either. I love it.
Brilliant!
AND, every American soldier learns to do it before they finish basic training. 🙄
1000%! the first day at West Point, we dropped my older brother off. they teach them to march and they later that day perform for the families. They have it down perfectly in one day. It is not hard.
The Hostage March.
Nothing like the SecDef placing lives at risk through SIGNAL and using racist, divisive commentary at Fort Bragg to “motivate” Soldiers”.
He doesn't think of them as actual human beings with their own thoughts and opinions. Immature child that he is, he thinks they're just toys to play with.
I thank them for their silent protest
And “Fortunate Son?” That had to be intentional. That was one of my favorite protest songs during the Vietnam War.
I said the same thing~
And for the fortunate son's birthday. The draft dodging rapist repeat conviction narcissistic socialpath........son.
🎯
Trump plays it at his rallies a lot though. I think he loves the song but has obviously never listened to the words.
I think he absolutely knows what the words of this song means. He plays it to mock the military because he was privileged and did not have to serve..
If he did, he probably never got past the first two lines.
He only knows the chorus and plays it because he thinks it makes him look like a “regular guy.”
Marching out of step on purpose = tiny act of resistance 🔥
H5N1, & Covid still spreading.
I’m happy to see I wasn’t the only one who noticed that.
OMG I was thinking the same thing when I saw them. My thought was that some lazy marching.
Six to the front & three to the rear…
Lol
NO MARINE would DRESS so SLOPPILY and "MARCH" in the Fashion that was done. I believe it was INTENTIONAL!
I’ve been wondering about this all day. Thank you!
The Army phoned it in. Clearly.
Seriously.
Agree 100%
Looked like a hot mess and loved it.
They could have used a little help from John Winger.
Lighten up, Francis.
RAZZLE-DAZZLE!!
That’s the fact, Jack!
THAT'S THE FACT, JACK!
Even during the most relaxed of ceremonial parades we did, like ANZAC day marches through small towns, where there's nobody screaming at us "head up, chest out, bear down on those thumbs" etc, it's still very normal to all fall into step, it's seasoned, effortless, no-one wants to trip on a heel
It was remarkably sloppy. Yay, Marines!
It was an intentional fuck you to trump. Pretty sure the Marines would have done the same.
Perhaps they thought they had to cross a bridge?
Even the military is protesting.
The armed forces didn't appreciate being used as political pawns in trumps birthday parade. I heard several interviews about it. So right, I would agree it was intentional.
Yup
Yep.
I believe they didn't have their heart in it. #MilitaryParade #SmallDickEnergy
They were mumbling, "Anywhere but here!" They didn't want to pay tribute to a so-called president who mocks and loathes the military as "Suckers and losers." He doesn't deserve their talent or time.
This is what Trump envisioned. All the other monarchs are gonna make fun of him at the next meeting.
🤣 During trump 1.0, he also saw French President Macron's military parade and commented back then that he wanted one. I'm sure you know that he's seen all the real dictators' parades & just had to have one, too. Back then, he had the real Generals who shut that idea down. Now he's got Kegsbreath.
Okay, this makes me feel better.
I agree.
👍
Oh I hope so!!! For what I could tell it was awful and the music....ugh...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJQS...
I love this woman!
🤭🤣
Yeah, we pretty much had that nailed before we even left Reception Battalion.
My son went to BCT when he joined the NG in 2009 (commissioned after graduating college in 2013). I remember him mentioning Reception Battalion. That's just a few days in the very first week, isn't it?
Yep, first 3ish days.
I noticed that as well.
I don't know how it's on your side at pool, but marching in step was like 2nd thing to learn as rookie at boot camp here.
I was told today by someone who went through Basic Training here in the US that learning to march in step is done the first week during what's known as Reception Battalion. She mentioned they spent "3-ish days" on teaching recruits everything they needed to learn about staying in sync.
I thought the same thing. Like the soldiers couldn’t come up with enough courage to refuse to participate said “I’ll march like a middle school marching band.”
It’s almost as if they were asked or forced to do something they did not want to do. Malicious compliance?
The consequence for the guys in your meme could be hours marching correctly next Saturday out on the parade grounds back on base! 🤣 Real troops learn how to march in lockstep the first few days of BCT in Reception Battalion. It becomes muscle memory & you don't ever forget how to get back in sync!
My son's been in the Army for 11+ yrs & never brought up malicious compliance. I looked it up. It's "a form of protest, but done in *compliance* w/ the letter of a directive." In this case, it was only sloppy! There could be some consequence, but not as serious as if an illegal act was committed.
They didn’t even look like they were marching. They were walking to their own tune!
1000% intentional. The vast majority of those soldiers do not feel good about being forced to act as a symbol of facism. And I feel terrible for the vast majority of them.
I helped a middle school band learn to march for a parade they had in a week. Even they could march in step.
You'd think that, but my drill leader was a member of the USN Dental Corps, and couldn't say "forward, march" on the beat to save his own life.
I was just in a convo with someone about this (no military background) and told him that by the end of month two of boot camp, my platoon looked far sharper and in sync than what we all saw yesterday in DC. Morale must be incredibly low within this army ranks. They knew they were being used
Yes. That’s where American marching skills peak.
Indeed. And hello, neighbor 👋
Spending several days sleeping on cots in a basement could have something to do with the lackluster mood, too.
The only time to break cadence is while crossing a bridge.
I said the same thing. They weren’t marching, they were walking. Big difference.
We did a better job in high school 😂🫣
Do you have a video to show what you are referring to?
That’s what I thought! Also the face expressions. Not firm and resolute but…sort of DGAF ish?
I literally saw one guy picking his nose. Didn't watch much of it either. Just checked in periodically to see if they were being inundated with rain yet. A decidedly desultory display.
Total WGAF vibe when I saw some of the clips. And the goofy waves from the tanks-- definitely not the fearsome images I know he wanted to see. I actually felt kinda bad for the troops. What a waste of time and money and energy.
The troops couldn't give him the finger, but they did what they could to show their disrespect. I say hooray for the troops.
Didn't they all have to sleep on the floor of the post office or something? Imagine what they got to eat between the time they woke up and had to report to the event. I'm sure their day sucked.
They were fed Army rations. 🙄
Agreed completely! Not only can it be quite easy, but it can also be FUN, if you're doing it for something that is motivating and makes you happy. This was very telling, and it makes me feel HEARTENED. THANK you for pointing this out, @charlotteclymer.bsky.social!
I didn't think of that. The first thing we learned in basic was how to march in step.
Intentional, you say? Let that lack of sync in.
It had to be. I know, for a fact that they are smart on the parade square. This is rebellion.
Well... crossing bridges they're not SUPPOSED to march in step, but they crossed that bridge already.
I hope that's the case! I've been to the Tomb of the Unknown and I've seen the Marine Silent Drill Platoon...and they were spectacular.
Years ago I was an Air Force wife. Saw far too many parades for my taste. Even small ones were much better than this. NOT an accident.
100% super easy ... the only time you break step is when you're going over a bridge or something, and you don't want create a vibration.
Also, I never saw anyone do the little half skip to get back into step.
Knitting Cult Lady said as much too.
Silent protest by military...love it
Isn't that called walking?
And that was some seriously bad marching.😳 No way it wasn’t intentional.
For anyone who has ever marched, it is actually harder to not keep on step-it becomes second nature where you naturally match whoever is next to you!!
Right?! Like we did this in marching band and it was very deliberate to just meander like that.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I also thought that might be the case. I didn't see it until this morning on Bluesky.
My son's boy scout troop marched better than that.
It was beautiful
Ab-so-f-ing-lute-ly! Ask any high school band member.
youtu.be/FOzub_ghAbM?...
Yes!!!
It had to have been. I was in Marching Band 30 years ago, and I, to this DAY, naturally fall into step within moments when around people marching.
Same. I also always lead off with my left foot😂
I hope you are right!!
Army taught us all a great lesson in malicious compliance yesterday
A friend of mine just now: He said "I want a parade on my birthday, and millions of people lining the streets!" and the monkey's paw curled
That is super funny
I kept blinking as I was watching, WTF?
I was under the impression that drill is not a very well practiced thing with American troops, is that not correct?
Marine veteran here. It is absolutely not correct. Working as a team is one of the cornerstones of military discipline.
My husband was Army. He said you are either marching or running.
I thought the same. Instep is instilled into you, day one. Judging by the looks on their faces and the sloppy formation, it was intentional.
If you can't even get them to march in step for you, I don't know how you think you can get them to kill the citizens of their own country for you.
It’s comforting to a small degree.
Definitely agree.
Abso-fucking-lutely! Love that military and marching band veterans picked up on this!!
😁 bsky.app/profile/scot...
They didn't want to be there. I love the subtlety of it. They made Hegseth "shine" lol.
I thought so too from the clips I saw. They did not want to be there and they were showing it.
