Not a seismologist but I was in a 7.8 once (Nepal 2015, would not recommend) and it was hard to stand up. An 8.8 is 32x as powerful per the Wikipedia article about these scales. I can't get my head around that. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_...
