Super interesting thread which I would like to see put up against the (plausible to me, a non-expert) @georgemonbiot.bsky.social thesis that (tldr) we don't want to shift away from industrial ag because local farming can't produce enough food so it would = mass starvation

Here's an example from @georgemonbiot.bsky.social. But if the thread is right and we could have enough food locally, that changes things. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

To be clear, I don't claim we can or should move away from industrial agriculture. I'm claiming we can and should massify small scale agriculture

Lots of staples (e.g. wheat, rice, lentils) are just easier to produce and process industrially, and they also happen to be the most dense in proteins and easier to store long term. Besides, what would I eat pesto with if not pastas ???

So it's very clear industrial agriculture is necessary to maintain anywhere near the current world population in a healthy state I just don't think it should be *the* exclusive model of food production, nor that it can keep such disregard for nutrient and soil depletion

Besides, I think the broad philosophy of direct action / policies that would benefit small scale agriculture would also benefit a healthier industrial agriculture - if only by lowering cartels' bargaining power and incentivizing folks to pay more for better food bsky.app/profile/fluf...
