And the thing is most of them arent even doing any work. They have to stay in the office until their boss leaves whenever that is, so you have to make it look like you're busy when you're not.

Which is like the WORST type of performative heroics. You are not getting anything done and not recharging away from work, not running errands, not spending time with your family. And if the boss leaves, it's probably to a bar and you have to go as well. It's so unneccessary.

Most of them hate the mandatory "drinks with the boss". They're tired and just want to go home, so they can just about get a few hours of sleep and then get on the treadmill again. I love Japan as a place to visit, but I'd never work there, at least not for a corporation.
