Like… “I try so hard to ‘separate the art from the artist’, but I just feel revolted when I see their name on the spine of the book. Does that make me Bad At Appreciating Art?” No!! It’s fine and normal to be grossed out by reminders of gross people!!

“They’re the exact same books I loved before I knew all the bad things. Is it somehow censorship if I tear them up and use them for kitty litter because I can’t forget about the children locked in cages in the basement?” Good! Good! Let the hate flow through you!

Then go and read a different book! There are, like, dozens of them.

There's SO MUCH good art out there, we can let go of any art that makes us feel icky for any reason up to and including "artist abused their kid(s)", "artist allowed other(s) to abuse their kid(s)", "artist abused other adults", "artist abuses other adults by proxy by being a famous bigot" etc.

I have given up Orson Scott Card, Marion Zimmer Bradley, David & Leigh Eddings, Piers Anthony, JK Rowling, and Neil Gaiman and have refused to buy the books of anyone featured in an "Authors behaving badly" video. Then there's recording artists, actors, directors... it's shockingly easy to do?

There are a LOT of books and movies in the world, and plenty enough of them were made by people who aren’t currently known to be assholes. (Some of them probably are assholes but we don’t know about it yet.)

And if it turns out they are assholes, we can hold on to our fond memories of how the art made us feel at the time and find someone else. I'm sure there's some element of "sunk cost fallacy" in some of this, but it's a fallacy, so we can let it go. Y'know?
