I hate saying this but Kevin Costner's THE POSTMAN has all of a sudden become relevant. Deep cut for those who know.
I hate saying this but Kevin Costner's THE POSTMAN has all of a sudden become relevant. Deep cut for those who know.
It's David Brin's "The Postman". Deeper, better cut.
Ew you’re right
Googled the plot... NOW I want to see it..
Yikes
Yes
The Postman had a great idea (one done better in Fallout New Vegas), but the execution was poor, especially the editing. No way that film should be close to three hours long. Down right diabolical!
The fact that I totally get this reference is not at all comforting…
Featuring Tom Petty.
MmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmI don't know, The US has been a shitty one-man ego trip with bad mail delivery for a while
Literally talked about this movie last week. But I’ve been thinking of a lot of dystopian movies, so n probably not that surprising. Wonder why that could be 🤷🏻♀️
Give the book by Brin a try. The movie did it no justice at all.
Absolutely.
The lesson being someone has to start delivering the mail again.
Sounds like Courier 6 from FNV almost
Ah yes, because they're making that Death Stranding movie. And definitely not for any soul crushing reason.
Oooh... Looking for it now. I can watch "Grimm" anytime.
Are you saying No Way Out isn’t relevant b/c Trump doesn’t bother to hide his connections to Russia?
Prescient indeed...like so many dystopian future movies and books...
When I mail anything from my local USPS office, it leaves Carlsbad, NM. My friend in Carlsbad, or anywhere, gets a birthday card postmarked Lubbock, TX.
🙄 wtf
Yikes. But true.
Very
Indeed it has
We need Tom Petty.
It's been relevant for years, and if the USPS thing is the only take away you had a very shallow viewing.
Okay, but did anyone else think it was a little funny that the lady had the postman’s baby?
Russian women are known for their beauty. American women are known for their glamour. French women are known for their fashion. What are Indian women known for??
This David Brin book has always haunted me. We are always so close to the edge.
So, you're saying if the Vikings win the Superbowl they'll be responsible for the rise of Holnists?
whoa! well said
Kevin Costner's Waterworld isn't too far off either Geniune prophet that one
Where is shea serrano when you need him????? He loves this movie @netw3rk.bsky.social
This man is a threat to The USPS. He'd love to see it fail bigly for his golfing buddy he lets win all the time.
I could definitely see a former Kinko’s clerk or whatever Will Patton was getting drunk on what they believe is god given power in the next few months.
The movie was OK, loved the cameo by Tom Petty. The book was better than the film though
The Postman is a great film. Severely underrated.
👏👏👏👏👏
Next up? Waterworld!
We just had Robinhood.
I actually liked that film.
Maybe full-on "The Road" :(
Weird.
A cult leader that destroys the country. Society breaks down. Government collapses. Fascist racist army terrorises the countryside. Costner is Nostradamus.
Climate breakdown
Need a rewatch. Great score as well.
Rule 8!
There is only one penalty.
I was just thinking the same thing a few days ago.
Liked the movie. Really liked the book.
Amazing coincidence. I was thinking about that flick & its relevance the other day when I heard DJT want to privatize it. He can’t do that!
Read the original novel. It's much better.
Always has been. I was surprised at how good I thought it was.
If a movie called "The Postman" had to become relevant, why couldn't it be "Il Postino"?
The book was better.
Im with you until the end of the book. The cyborgs and such absolutely ruined the book for me.
il postino?
Has it become a good movie though?
No
Ford, Lincoln, Mercury
Only if we don't Waterworld ourselves first. Honestly I never understood why people disliked those movies. I thought they were great, even as a kid.
The Postman wasn’t a bad movie, it just fell flat in comparison to a truly great book. As for Waterworld, just drown it! Dumb premise, dumber ending. Sorry. :)
I still remember the pathetic, so very helpless female lead in Waterworld. Cringe.
Trapped on a dinghy with someone who showed zero compunction about killing her and the little girl and who they depended on to survive in the middle of an endless ocean?
That too.
Yeah, in retrospect and with a decade and a half of time later Oh yeah, that *does* sound bad, doesn't it?
I remember her as a bimbo. And that killed it for me.
Valid. Same with Waterworld.
I was looking forward to Waterworld with *MASSIVE* interest, since the time I read about it a year before it came out - but I was greatly disappointed by what we got. On the other hand, I really like The Postman, and have watched it several times!
Most of the roads in this country aren't cost effective..
The role of Tom Petty will be played by @markhamillofficial.bsky.social
First we go Blade Runner than we go postman...i love it.
I've been thinking the EXACT same thing for the past 5 weeks - in fact, I posted about it several weeks ago, that we just might now be living in the unpublished prequel to that story... @hexagonmagazine.bsky.social @sfwa.bsky.social @scifiorama.bsky.social
Right
…read that as a kid and I can’t tell you how many times the news has dredged up recollections of the Holnists.
Some of the more degenerate & extreme MAGAts are already Holnists, but don't know it since they don't read...
You’re on to something.
Hi
I'm a long way from St Rose
Funny....I stood near he and his kids at the 4th of July parade this past summer.
I laughed so hard at the short time frame America crumbled in the movie, but I guess I just didn't realize how fast the fall can be
This thought has crossed my mind as well. Less the movie than the far-superior book.
It's been relevant from the beginning. And yes, there were right-wing cranks bitching about it within a year after it came out.
Even deeper cut: the novel is much better and even more relevant.
Indeed. Loved the movie (and the book) but not so in love with it becoming reality…
It’s like you bring hope in a bag. Eesh.
Mad Max 🇺🇸
It was a real good movie, and yeah suddenly yeah it is relevant. 👣🫂
Should I watch it, for the first time ever, or just nod knowingly?
Watch it, it's good film!
I’d prefer waterworld at this point…which is a fantastic film
Tom Petty lives
The book is excellent, read it several years before the film.
Tru dat
Damn, no I don’t. Perhaps time for a rewatch…
You're right.
The novel by David Brin is far better.
Been years since I've seen that one ... need to go back and give it a re-watch
Well that’s certainly a take
Deep paper cut.
@davidbrin.bsky.social thanks for enabling this David. lol 🤣
This is true.
that movie has never been relevant (or good) - masturbatory vehicle for kevin costner to figuratively suck himself off
Waterworld, too.
Hell, Yellowstone was good in the beginning but it became a maga grievance fest toward the end. In the series finale, they murder their Democrat brother. Also relevant.
Nice to know I can skip that whole franchise
Worth watching the 5 minutes that Piper Perabo is in it but at that point you might as well watch Billions instead. Giamatti > Costner.
House of Cards started out as the greatest series since Sopranos/The Wire (take your pick). It ended up as an unfunny joke. Yellowstone said, "Hold my beer, I can do worse."
The best part of Waterworld is the symbolism and triumph of socialism vs capitalism. Oil/money is the root of all evil!
Thanks for reminding me of that film!!!!!!!
The WORST fucking movie ever made and you say wut?
Absolutely
Thought it was a good movie. Know I'm on the minority, but whatever!
Deeper cut for those who read the book
I thought the same thing when Nectarine Nero appointed Joy.
📌
IYKYK
I love that movie
We lost Tom Petty too soon
Before we know it, it will be “Waterworld”.
If you think the movie is relevant, @davidbrin.bsky.social’s novel is even more so. There are a couple of folk who look like they are vying for the role of Nathan Holn…
Am I the only one who actually loves this film? Costner directed. And fun fact, the boy at the end holding out his hand waving is his real life son. But yes we are living in an apocalyptic hellscape where norms and traditions must be fought for over people and things that would oppress us.
Nope I've lived it since I saw it in theaters.
Great book. I was living on 18th in Eugene and reading how he came up 18th in Eugene…
Absolutely phenomenal film. Childhood favorite, more so than Waterworld. 🔥💨😶🌫️💙🦋🏴☠️🍻🤙🏽😎💯🫡👽🖖🏽
I’m watching it again now, and I genuinely can’t understand why people dislike this movie. What was wrong with everyone in 1997? This movie fucking slaps.
Fr!
Nope, it’s fucking awesome. Apart from Field of Dreams, The Postman is my favorite Kevin Costner film.
I unapologetically love this movie.
The book is effing amazing. The movie is a passable telling of part of the story.
Unfortunately Tom Petty isn’t here to be the mayor of Bridge City… 😔
Love the movie! I've re-watched it many times.
Joe, wasn't it? Costner tells big stories when he has his head, and that isn't coming in a 90 minute cinematic candy bar. It's the entire meal deal.
I read this almost 30 years ago & thought it would be a great movie. And then I never got around to watching the movie.
Holy COW, how did I miss that Brin wrote this book...?! I need to get a copy, stat!
I saw this movie and the titanic in the same afternoon. I loved the book. Was so anticipating the movie. Ended up learning a good life lesson about expectations and disappointment. I really don’t know what I would’ve thought of the movie if I’ve never read the book.
Ali, many movies are relevant to the current status quo! Everything is exceedingly alarming and scary. I, for one, am absolutely certain the US is in the process of being "ORBANIZED". This is and has always been the game plan.
I had the misfortune of visiting my local USPS location this past weekend to mail out a holiday package. It should really drop “Service” from its name. There were 3 employees at the counters, but apparently only 1 can provide postal service with a dozen customers in line during the holiday season.
Did we find out Tom Petty is still alive?
The novel was so much better.
Where’s Tom Petty now that we need him most?
Now I have to watch it.
It's actually a book.
Ford Lincoln Mercury was the badass we need right now.
Loved the movie! Not a fan of those who say “ the book was better”. Reading a book is “theater of one’s mind”. The way your mind pictures a written book will always differ from a producer’s theatrical version of the same book.
Yeah. DeJoy. It just burns my 🫏 that nobody on Biden’s team could fire him up on this issue. I know he could only replace USPS Board members (did he do a couple?), and only those members can fire DeJoy. But, hell. Damage done. He kneecapped the USPS.
RIP Tom
not yet but soon
True.
Oh. I thought this was a reference to the “bad mumps.”
Waterworld seems inevitable.
The novel by Brin even more so!
Absolutely every public service will be privatized by oligarchs. Pay to breathe.
Haven't seen it. The David Brin novel was excellent, and prescient.
I looked at description. I will check it out if it comes on the streaming service I pay for or the free ones
Great movie. Wild that it's becoming a documentary
So has Waterworld…
The clan had its own government with their rules. Even in that movie, they had some form of government.
Yep. Just started reading Parable of the Talents, a dystopian novel written by Octavia E Butler who wrote this in 1998 and died in 2009. The President in this book wants to “Make America Great Again”. Gives me the shivers.
excellent use of "deep cut" right there with a quality double meaning.
Looks like a lot of people are never going to get those bills that they're supposed to pay each month. Without mail delivered billing...how will companies collect their payments? Believe it or not, a lot of ppl still rely on paper statements & still write checks to pay bills. Hooray! No more bills!!
The Man In The High Castle is very relevant now, too.
I liked the movie a lot when it came out. I was in the minority. Same with Water and the supposed Hoffman Beatty movie. All were good.
I'll bite, what are you talking about? Also, the movie is your reference and not the book it's based on?
The book's even better.
It’s a fantastic film and story!
In that it's about the ineptitude of the government to the point where there's only a single mailman left to deliver for the whole country and who really only took the job to avoid freezing and starving to death while living out of his car (for one night, but come on).
Good call. I forgot about that movie but you’re right.
Well, I know what I’m watching tonight.
I've been saying that since Nov 5th. The little copy machine man. IYKYK
The first Mad Max as well.
Never saw "Waterworld But On Land" the first time. Now headed to Wikipedia to get it
The original book by David Brin is amazing. Great add for your Apocalypse reading list.
His Uplift series is top notch scifi too. Can't recommend him enough.
And one more: I hate saying this, but "V" with Marc Singer has also all of sudden become VERY relevant. If you have not watched the entire miniseries (not the TV series), watch it.
Also: some people like to talk shit about the USPS, but they are efficient as F. You can get a letter or package pretty much *anywhere* across the entire US, in a week or less, regardless.
Used to be, DeJoy is wrecking it, still having many problems, especially here in Georgia
I lived in semi-rural GA for over 40 years (up until 2022), and I never had an issue. I stand by my statement on its general efficiency.
We have had several pieces of mail lost in the past several months, including my son’s birthday present, thanks DeJoy. Yes, it used to be good until the Palmetto facility opened, now its awful
I've been likening trump to general bethlehem for a while, over on the other place... The type of man who will NEVER give up, even when beaten. And that doesn't even touch on the relevance of the USPS as means of efficient communication, or a wasteland of disease when science has disappeared
I refer to that movie as DirtWorld... simply because of the other movie
It's such a great film, albeit not as fast pacing-wise compared to modern stuff. That being said, love how letters/communication is framed as a way to heal a fractured society.
Book was better. 😁
That movie literally popped into my head the other day for the very same reason you're suggesting.
My dad saw the trailer and thought it looked good back in the day. I thought it looked ridiculous. His take that it’s possible was more accurate I now see.
That movie.... she's. But true!
😮
I’d settle for Tom Petty still being alive.
Massimo Troisi's Il Postino, too...
Except in today’s version, he’d find an abandoned Amazon delivery truck, and just start bringing people random Temu crap. “Do you have any food, Amazonman? We’re starving!” “Ummmm…I have a water bottle with a built-in Bluetooth speaker, if that helps anything.”
Hello
I keep saying, it's literally alllllll the dystopias.
For real, I just watched it a few days ago and posted a similar thought.
The book was better
True this!!
I need to watch this. Thanks for the reminder.
Dystopia
Waterworld isn't far off either....
Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" has been relevant for a while. As with "12 Monkeys" and "Being There." Why not move along to the next dismal thing?
One of my favourite films.
true but it is still a rubbish film.
Just another tactic to isolate people from each other.
Death Stranding also beginning to look like a possible scenario
I find myself wondering if local communities can keep their own post offices for county use and then join with like-minded counties across the country to agree to receive and deliver snail mail and small packages. Or we can return to paying travelers to take a letter along and hope it arrives.
I sent a registered letter, return receipt requested via USPS in September. It still has not been delivered, and this was to NC WELL before the hurricane. Ben Franklin would be furious.
It’s always been true that registered mail with return receipts requested takes longer than regular mail, but two months is ridiculous. 🙄🤔
Three months. Even given it was to NC and the hurricane, this is ridiculous.
DeJoy did the destructive job he was hired to do. 😐
And Biden and the Democrats did absolutely nothing about that clusterf, either. Never even mentioned there was a problem for 4 years. And Biden still won’t fire him for the next six weeks.
I believe he can’t be fired , not sure the whole story.
www.palmbeachpost.com/story/opinio... for more on that.
He can, but by only the oversight committee. It didn't have Dems until recently thanks to Trump.
Thanks I knew there was some hitch.
Biden can’t fire him directly. Only the USPS board can and they are nominated by presidents and confirmed by the Senate like SCOTUS. GOP blocked Obama’s nominees, saving them for Trump. They let Biden have some but not enough to fire DeJoy. MSM could have covered this issue. Corporate media fail.
Or, we could enforce the law and put criminal dejoy in jail where criminals belong -- he has been caught fraud more than once. But that would require a federal agency that actually enforces laws.
Well, since every "official act" of a President has now been rendered immune from legal action or prosecution by the SCOTUS, Biden could always call Seal Team Six to ... you know, "handle the problem."
Apparently Biden could have fired him for gross negligence/dereliction, but that would likely provoke a legal case that would end up in SCOTUS. I still think it would've been worth it.
Agreed.
Unfortunately, Biden is a self-inflating political punching bag. He never once threw a punch.
Since Biden took an oath to enforce the laws and Constitution, why won’t he enforce Sec 3, Article 14? Trump cannot be sworn in as President. He was serving in office and committed an insurrection. How will Biden carry out that law?
Actually that's NOT what it says. It says SCOTUS makes each determination. We should be REALLY worried they reserved that power to themselves and did not give a blanket power to the president. Selective enforcement of the law sucks.
Agreed. I was just indulging in a sweet fantasy...
I think there were a couple of double agents here.
So technically Trump can't fire the IRS guy, either, then?
www.palmbeachpost.com/story/opinio...
You have the patience of a saint to explain all of this that has been explained so many times before. People don’t read, I guess. 😮💨
I’m hoping that more people will see how they are trying to destroy and then privatize the USPS and I’m annoyed that we didn’t get more oversight and reporting. The obvious goal is privatization of nearly everything so they can profit. But I’m done for the night. 😎🎤
I will say that this I’m not interested in doing guys’ homework. I’m not a journalist and not getting paid so anyone demanding more info from me can google just as well as I have. Possibly better if they don’t live with chronic pain.
"Cry 'Havoc!' and let slip the dogs of war"
I think my parents are the number one fans of this movie, albeit solely from cable viewings. There’s an audience for everything!
Mail-In Ballots?
Then don't rewatch the movie!
