This is partly why the demise of the Washington Post is so problematic. The alternative to the New York Times is gone. Those people don't have another newspaper to go to. The Atlantic has scooped a lot of people up but a magazine isn't the same role as a newspaper.
NYT has been wet garbage for its entire existence. The difference is that people are finally noticing WaPo and The Atlantic at least had times they were good (those times are not now - Atlantic is just as bad as the other two)

Magazines can go in more depth but cover less things and less grounds. Magazines can't be the "paper of record" for that reason. Both are valuable. I subscribe to both newspapers and magazines.

The premise in the first paragraph makes no sense to me. There are good points made later but the initial premise is off-putting, pointless, and wrong. (I do have the cheapest sub to NYT ($1 a month) but mainly for the puzzles. I read some opinion but very rarely.)
