Are these tank or tankless heaters? (growing up, my family would run out of hot water pretty often when everyone was showering, even though we had two fairly-large heaters, so I'm wondering how a small tank system would be adequate)

This is a water heater with a small tank. The reason why so many Americans run out of water despite having large water heaters is because American water heaters come preset to store at 120°F (50°C) instead of 140°F (60°C). This means lower energy storage (and higher waterborne pathogen risk).
