I think I see one brown person.
I think I see one brown person.
Who needs Photoshop when you’ve got nail clippers and glue?
No women. No brown or black people.
no womens toilets = no women
People dressed better and were well groomed back then as well. They still cheat us on the toilet supply. 😂🤷♀️
well the UK got piss equality in 1992 ;-) nominally, the throughput difference between standing up and sitting down still affects it though should be like the Germans and everyone sits down to piss
Bottom right photo has young black men. Standing at the front.
Yes, I saw a few women 500:1 ratio and a black man. USA baseball or hockey in 1966 would have looked pretty much the same.
The most popular sport for Carribbean people would have been cricket. So you would have a very different view for a crowd at an England v West Indies match.
Apologies top right.
Union jacks and suits. Tally ho!
No mobile phones, living in the moment... /sarc
Mixed crowd, not segregated by support?
English "flags" since 1996, not a single one before
England played Scotland in the groups, possibly relevant
Crowd composition seems a bit different also
I think England playing Scotland early on at Euro 96 might have been a factor. Wouldn't make sense to take a Union flag to that game
Same would apply to 'God Save The Queen / King' then?
Well that's an interesting rabbit hole. Since the early 90s 🏴 sing Flower of Scotland with GSTQ/K being the specifically 🏴 anthem for sporting events. There's a view that 🏴 should have their own anthem so GSTK can be reserved for events where GB/UK compete as such
Yes, indeed - I guess I was trying to say that it still happens nonetheless. Similarly the England v Scotland group game might have been *a* factor in the prevalence of St George's Cross flags at Euro 96, but, to the best of my recollection, I dont think it was a particularly huge one.
Oh yes, I'm not saying it was the only factor (or even a main factor)
I was thinking about this the other day, I'd definitely pin Euro '96 as a turning point. When growing up, it was as a Brit with the Union flag to the fore. That Euros was the first time that the George Cross became a big thing
I know that a lot of people are noticing the suits thinking that it meant people were more buttoned up and formal, but in fairness, suits were more fashionable then.
widespread use of the St George cross is new and fash adjacent
Yes to the first, no to the second.
How strange. I have never seen a union Jack at a football game. Excluding Ibrox, obviously.
