Trump is ordering the Smithsonian to strip “divisive narratives” from exhibits. We know what that means: gloss over painful parts of our past to highlight the “good” ones. We should recognize all of America's history—including our faults—not ignore them.

Trump would like to further whitewash the history of the US, but it's, as it's popularly understood, already whitewashed to an alarming degree. You could build a dozen large museums dedicated just to the painful parts and faults of the US, and most of it would be news to most Americans.
