In a previous job, the lab-head welcomed us with "you have no time for hobbies now, science is your hobby" I laughed, at what I thought was obvs a joke Please, have hobbies and passions beyond work. It doesn't mean you're lazy or profligate, it means you experience more of what it is to be human.

That is very sad ! Love hearing about peoples hobbies 😀 one of the PhDs brings in his astronomy photos and they are incredible!

If this is the lab head I think it is (it probably isn't) he was watching other people do fun stuff on 3 different tabs at the back of the conference one time and I thought it was genuinely quite sad.

It's not that person 🙂 But I do think genuinely having no hobbies or interests outside of work is sad (not in the haha-loser sense, but in that it's a huge shame)

This brought to you by my recent thoughts on taking up scything, (there's a course near Whernside) I've chosen against it for now, as the patch of ground I look after is next to a graveyard and I think (on balance), that a loud strimmer is less upsetting than strolling along with a scythe 😅

Uh oh. I fear I'm increasingly close to acquiring a scythe www.stnicks.org.uk/events/green... I am not someone in need of another distinct hobby..
