“I asked my mom, ‘What made my grandfather such a civic-minded man? Why was he always there to help someone who had lost their job? Take food to someone who couldn’t make ends meet? What made him so engaged with his community and his state?’ Mom said, ‘Labor.’” www.thenation.com/article/arch...

Here’s the sign my mom and I put on the statue on the first day the protests moved beyond students. And here’s the second one I made to carry during the protests, currently hanging in my garage.

A statue of Wisconsin’s state symbol, Forward, in front of the state Capitol in Madison, WI, February 2011. A sign hangs from her neck that reads: “For Sale: Wisconsin. Call Scott Walker” with the phone number to the Governor’s office. Two signs hang in a messy garage. One reads: “A united Wisconsin to RECALL WALKER.” A second reads: “FOR SALE: WISCONSIN.”
