Tomato sauce 🌱 🍽️ I used Brandywine and Ace 55 tomatoes with a small onion, garlic, basil, and a bit of beet powder (for color) from the garden. I only have a few ripe Romas and San Marzanos - not enough to make sauce yet. #vegetablegarden #foodsky

A small batch of tomato sauce in a pot. Next to the pot is a small bowl filled with ripening tomatoes and a white plate with a wooden spoon resting on it. The sauce was made with 1 pound of fresh tomatoes, a small onion, garlic clove, olive oil, basil, and a bay leaf.

All our sauce types are finished for the summer, cherries are still going strong though so hope to get some more soup and sauce from them!

why do you need the coloring? Also, surely tomato sauce need not only be Romas and SMs.? We love making sauce from toasted cherry tomatoes. not to say that that doesn't look delicious. Are you preserving it?

And yes, obviously sauce doesn't have to be made from just Romas and SM tomatoes 😀. I've made it from cherry toms too!

The beet powder isn't necessary at all. The pink brandywines I used didn't have that deep tomato red color so the sauce just looked light to me. I've seen a few other cooks use beets for that purpose so thought I'd try it. I made this for dinner, not to preserve.
