unrelated but Massachusetts does have the best motto in the union: she seeks with the sword peaceful repose under liberty
the full quote its from goes even harder: "manus haec inimica tyrannis ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" which means "this hand, an enemy to tyrants, seeks with the sword peaceful repose under liberty"
Also a fun use of the older indigenous Latin word, ensis (-is) for sword rather than the later word, probably imported, gladius (-ii). By the time our Latin literature really fills out, the loanword, gladius, had largely chased out ensis from all but poetry.
THIS HAND *flips the bird* AN ENEMY TO TYRANTS

Ok, that might beat VA's "Sic Semper Tyranus" with Athena stomping on a Roman.
It's Virtus and Tryranny (designed to look like King George III) Also, it's the only state flag with a nipple and toes.
Well, TIL. I did know about being the only state flag that flashed boob, though.
The old state seal had the motto "En Dat Virginia Quintam" or "Behold, Virginia gives the fifth." A reference to the four claimed crowns of the British monarchs (England, Scotland, Ireland, and France) and the colony's Royalist tendencies that also gave it the name "The Old Dominion."
Yeah why do we need a new motto? I only knew we were shopping for a new flag.
