I watched this a few times when I was a kid. Charles Martin Smith forms a band called Cotton Candy and they face-off against a rival group in a battle of the bands. Directed by Ron Howard, who co-starred with Smith ("Toad") in American Graffiti. Clint Howard is also in this. A decent TV movie. 👍🎸
