I’m a big Gus Hasford fan, John. The over zealous prosecution of his book hoarding case most assuredly led to his untimely downfall. Never got to write his final follow-up to Short Timers/Phantom Blooper. Both classics.

He was taking books, beyond the rules, from libraries, btw, as research for a novel and he'd fixated on the idea that he must read every single book that related in any way to the concept of his book. I'm not sure what book it was. But he'd gone a bit loopy on that.
According to an interview I read online, he had at least a dozen book ideas sketched out by the time the Cal Poly cops raided his locker. No wonder he needed so many volumes.
Gus died from complications of untreated diabetes. He went to Greece and died there...but being persecuted over library books couldn't have helped.
