Or did he? If he were infected with it he'd not have lived functionally to 1865. Hearndon either got it wrong, or lied. There was no cure. Also he'd have given it to his wife, who was ALWAYS crazy, and who didn't die of it; and his son Robert did not have it,a nd would likely have gotten it fetally.
