The Ukrainians aren't going to win the war at the current rate of our support and would almost certainly need manpower beyond their own population. So we either go whole hog or we let them bleed out until we get a settlement where they give up territory from deals on the table years ago.

There was never a deal on the table to get peace with Ukraine holding what it holds now. Ukraine is offering literally that and Russia won’t take the deal

Russia wants the Donbas and hasn't been able to take two major cities (Kramatorsk, Sloviansk) there. And, they want to keep their territories in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. But they won't sign a ceasefire until Ukraine withdraws from those two cities, nor will they consider returning those oblasts

Russia wants to control Ukraine, meaning eliminating their independence. Putin has said this explicitly, and his actions demonstrate it. Putin may be forced to give up these objectives if he thinks he can't win the war. Right now, Putin is the one who refuses to have a ceasefire.

Russia hasn't killed or displaced more people in Ukraine or attempted to completely eliminate Ukrainian culture only because Ukraine has an army that was able to stop Russia in the east. In any case, fortunately, the Ukrainian government is not similar to Hamas.

The Ukrainian government was democratically elected and is not formed by religious lunatics. The Ukrainian government's main objective is to reform itself in order to enter the European Union. There is also no complication about where Russians and Ukrainians should live. Both countries are huge.
