Rufo is more tied into contemporary avowed fascist movements than probably any other high-profile right wing activist and it’s just a complete non-issue. Nobody cares.
Media is completely ill-equipped to deal with this. Raising the issue would not be "objective". You'd have to have someone make a campaign against Rufo on this, and then they'd allow themselves to do "he said she said" reporting. Maybe.

American media (and society at large) views success as self-justifying. If someone is successful/competent while being associated with fascists, then clearly fascism can’t be that bad.
American media is also owned by people who are either corporate fascists, or who benefit from said corporate fascism and thus allow it to perpetuate unchecked.

Thank you for the reminder of the role of Degrelle in the pantheon. Not sure the mileage gotten by “nobody cares.” Chronicling, fighting, & raising alarms abt the American hard right, including Rufo, has been the work of so many of us, activists, journalists, lawyers, voters, even politicians.

I heard about him early because he was running for office in my city. But basically I tell everyone that the "CRT" boogeyman (qua boogeyman, not the actual concept) is all Christopher Rufo Theory because it was his idea to talk it up as being the latest Big Bad Wedge Issue.
