Who did you see in concert that not only impressed you with their performance, but with the way they interacted with the audience?
Who did you see in concert that not only impressed you with their performance, but with the way they interacted with the audience?
Sting comes to mind, solo and during reunion tour with The Police.
It was unexpectedly The Kinks in about 1980 in Boulder, Co. They came back for 5 encores and they were all cover songs like Twist and Shout and Help
Springsteen
Garth Brooks put on an amazing show when I saw him. And I’m not a country fan usually.
Fitz and the Tantrums
Wind Rose, last week in Saarbrucken, Germany 🇩🇪… unfortunately they’re not here on Bluesky yet.
Every Prince concert I ever saw
The greatest show I've ever seen was his Lovesexy tour. At one point he said – to what I'm sure was a largely secular audience – "If you don't believe, just believe tonight!" and it felt like everyone *did*.
I totally get that. The audience were always with him each of the 9 times I saw him. Most memorably when he debuted 'Sexy MF' on the Diamonds and Pearls tour. 20,000 people singing "Sexy muthafucka shaking that ass, shaking that ass" - amazing 💜
Alas Diamonds and Pearls was my least favourite of the four tours I caught. Saw it at Earls Court in London and the staging was so dark that you could barely see anything. Also, and I may be in a minority of one here, I think Diamonds and Pearls is a very flimsy album...
I loved it but we were very close to the front, so it was pretty special. It's not my favourite album but I wouldn't have said it's flimsy. There are a couple of gems in there (see what I did there? 😉).
Glad you enjoyed it! Diamonds and Pearls' title track and Gett Off are great. The rest I'd gladly never hear again, and Insatiable is my least favourite of his many Do Me Baby rewrites. The Symbol album afterwards was, I thought, much better.
Symbol is superior for sure.
Stevie Nicks
Also Bruce, the Kinks, and Garbage
Alice Demicele, she brought her dog onstage
I don't know who Alice Demicele is, but any artist who brings a dog onstage gets my vote 🐾
She is a river guide in Oregon www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyfR...
Good stuff, thank you!
Taj Mahal
Mariah and Celine: obviously both astonishing singers, but also demonstrated entertainingly sarcastic senses of humour. It's possible they tailored their acts to audiences in London, where sarcasm is as much a part of the currency as pounds and pence.
Many of these are not unexpected. Bands/artists like Jackson Browne, Springsteen, Sammy Hagar always had command of their audience. One I was not expecting was Storm Large playing with the Balls. She opened for Nina Hagen, was barely advertised and she was amazing, mesmerizing. Before she was on TV
First concert was Iron Maiden… Bruce Dickinson led a sing-off between sides of the arena and also shut down a fool who threw fireworks in the crowd. Masterclass of creating a safe and fun environment.
Most recent….Yonder Mountain String Band!
Leonard Cohen spent a significant portion of his show on his knees, literally in supplication to his audience and his art. It was profound.
Collective soul. They were trying out new unrecorded material. Working from sheet music. The lead singer had to go back stage and grab his reading glasses completely breaking the cool rock dude spell. And it's was an ongoing theme for the rest of the show. Hilarious.
I always loved Billy Joel's self-effacing charm, wiseguy attitude and "Don't take any sh!t from anybody!" concert-ending advice, LOL!!😂🎹👍
Iggy Pop without a doubt.
Kinks Cowsills
Many of those named here, plus lots of others including Led Zeppelin at the Cardiff Capitol Theatre in '72. Robert Plant chatted extensively. Also Rory Gallagher, although he sounded so knackered it was difficult to get most of it! Pat Metheny is very talkative. More recently, Janis Ian.
U2
Petula Clark; it was about 32 BCE
Bruce Hornsby Trombone Shorty
Yes to Trombone Shorty, he puts on such a great, interactive show!!
Depeche Mode
Dave Gahan saw my sign and pointed. Their interaction with the crowd was excellent, Dave and Martin Gore. They seemed to enjoy performing and said we were a better crowd than Montreal two nights earlier !
Richard Butler and The Psychedelic Furs. He was so kind and appreciative of us being there and the band was on fire!
Decades ago: Arlo Guthrie in a smallish venue at ASU, Tempe,AZ.
The sharpest stage banter I’ve ever heard was from Lyle Lovett, Crowded House, and (far away the cleverest, worthy of a stand-up comedy show) Stew, both solo and with his band The Negro Problem.
Sungazer! I was not expecting them to involve the audience but they did A LOT and were amazing on top of that. I still remember looking beside me and seeing this little ol grandma shuffling to some odd meter with a huge smile on her face.
Stevie Ray Vaughan - 1989 show in downtown Dallas. I remember waving my "We love you!" sign at him and receiving a smile and nod in return. (I actually found a clip.) His live shows were so great. He always seemed to be in the moment. youtu.be/1v8F4LA_Cys?...
OMD - Andy is SO charismatic and is super fun & funny.
There were several, but Billy Joel sticks out in my mind.
First 2 that come to mind: Bruce Springsteen Michael Bublé
James Taylor…every time!
@jeremyfishermusic.bsky.social is great live and really good at crowd interaction; very funny!
Springsteen
I wasn’t a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan, but I went to see Garbage open for them & stayed for the whole show. Billy Corgan made an arena show feel like we were in a small auditorium. His musicianship & audience banter were both amazing.
