He likes to play curmudgeon but (I suspect) it's largely performative. He's prickly. But most 60+ year old guys are.

Wait until you hit 60 and older. Actually between 60-70 was pretty good, after 70 your body really start to let you know that you are heading for the rust heap. And it just keeps going downhill from there.
