Did you think they were gonna stay away forever? They’re part-time legislators, they have jobs and homes and families.

It’s not like they were out on the street, they were put up in hotels in Chicago with room service and wifi. I’ve certainly spent 6 month stretches in worse locales away from friends and family. If you’re not gonna go through with it, don’t bother, imo.

So they should have just quit their jobs? Be serious.

A huge problem with the whole “part time legislators who get paid peanuts” concept is that only the wealthy can afford to do it. A 9 to 5 where someone else sets your schedule is incompatible with being in a legislature that can get called at anytime. I doubt any would have to quit.

Like Wisconsin’s, where elected office is fundamentally out of the question if your family relies on your professional salary to make ends meet. So you get a lot reps who are business owners, real estate, lawyers, nepo babies, or have situations where their spouse makes the bank. Sucks.
