The vast majority of Catholic schools around us do not take students with IEPs or if they do, it’s students with mild disabilities or speech only. Even though here in Indiana where they gets millions in public dollars, they still don’t have to take kids with special needs.
Catholic schools do not provide any sort of accommodations. I truly wish they had been honest about this with my family instead of gaslighting us for years with false promises to review my child’s case.
They insisted on an expensive neurological test that was not covered by insurance to “prove” the already physician diagnosed disability. I paid for the test- which supported the diagnosis- and then waited nearly a year to be told no to my requests for fidgets, chewing gum, separate testing space.
I suspect this may have something to do with Trumps attempt to dismantle the education department, and this cutting funds.

This is horrible. One thing people do need to know though is that when a school has a low rating it’s a direct reflection of the parenting in that area. It has very little to do with the school or teachers.
It's usually more of a reflection of the wealth inequality of the area, actually. The level of systemic racism in education produces these results as well.

Yeah, like, I'm ready to fight if someone tells us where, but my guess is something about the story got lost in the transfer between people. A public school charging parents of disabled kids extra would be leapfrogging over several steps of illegal fuckery.

So, this brings up even more questions that I wasn't able to get answers to from the news articles or a quick Google search, but it sounds like Open Enrollment students are from outside of the district? And the district is letting them in to fill classrooms where there is space?
If that's the case, then you might be able to make an argument for discrimination if they're only denying students with IEPs. But ultimately, they're not entitled to attend another district, and what would more than likely happen there is they would shutter the Open Enrollment program altogether.
I think this is the correct analysis - and the district has said they can attend if they “voluntarily” give up their IEPs. Because this only applies to students from outside the district, who *do* have seats which meet their IEPs in their home districts, it’s probably legal (if shitty).

It seems funding is being threatened to be or planned to be cut, but no evidence anyone has been told they have a bill to pay. Open enrollment seems to being modified, badly, and services may be unavailable, but no one has been mailed a bill it seems.
Totally unconstitutional. Period.

It’s important to have context. It looks like this is denying students with IRPs who are open-enrolled from other districts. The district can do this, effectively sending them back to their own district. When cuts happen in education, districts have to look to where they can save money.

Special education services are some of the largest expenses for a school district and some students could exceed the 4000 mentioned. This was why IDEA was passed to ensure districts deliver those services when they receive funding. It’s why we actually need a Dept. of Ed.
What happens when the parents or kids get dinged because the kid isn't going to school? Even though they CAN'T go to school without paying extra money.
They can use vouchers (as if that would cover the cost)
