The explosion in Javascript is explained very simply: it offloads back-end processing onto the user. It cuts business costs. It also does so very inefficiently.

HTML5 has a lot of useful stuff in it, which is why you don't see "install this Flash plugin" on empty pages these days. It's "turn on javascript" instead.
