Ooooh we’re doing the economic anxiety myth to excuse the rural south’s racism. They flipped hard right in 1964, votes hard right for the past 60 years. But yes it’s the “coastal elites” fault they keep voting to impoverish themselves. You people say the exact same shit republicans do.
I wasn't talking specifically about the south here. And I wasn't talking about the (predominantly white) voters that swing between GOP and Dem. I'm talking about the working-class and marginalized (INCLUDING Black and brown) voters trapped in these gerrymandered "red" and "purple" states...
...who might sometimes vote Dem locally but consistently get fucked by both parties to varying degrees. The sort of people whose choice in local elections is often either the shitty right-of-center Democrat (the Joe Manchin type) or staying home. People effectively if not literally disenfranchised.
And also the people who live in "blue" pockets of GOP or swing states (e.g. Houston) who have a similar experience with local Dem rule to people living in Boston or Seattle, who know firsthand that the Dems are two-faced liars who will funnel as much money into the police as any Republican
People for whom "lesser evil" and "harm reduction" are empty phrases, who would vote for viable Labor or Green Party candidates in a heartbeat if they existed. This isn't just about racism, even if that does play a role in giving the Democrats permission to be their worst selves
