If all states join the battle of redrawing congressional districts, where could we possibly end up as far as numbers in congress? I have a feeling this won’t end with Texas and California.

I'd be shocked if any blue state beyond California does anything.
If it goes nationwide, the GOP would likely have a small advantage in the redistricting battle. I don’t think it will end with Texas and California, either, but I hope it does. This shit is terrible for the nation.
Don't forget WI's SC now has a liberal majority to approve fairer maps
I live in CA. I don’t want to vote for redistributing but will if Texas redraws their maps (and it looks like they have).
Yup, they've done it. Here we go...
Not as horrible as not taking back Congress.
What if the Blue States just go full ham and redistrict Republicans completely out of office. Scorched earth
Just another step towards civil war, again. Because the last one was so great for everyone.
Feels like we’re witnessing a slow motion implosion of our country.
Feels pretty damn fast to me. Since day one.
Can anyone explain to me why California stopped at adding only FIVE Dem seats? Why not more? Was it the function of making the maps work OR was it a function of Dems taking a more polite "well, let's not get totally carried away" approach? Could Newsom have reasonably pushed for more?
I saw like 3 seats total for the GOP. Between this and mobilizing 19 states national guards this is getting really bad quick
This is why if California is going to do this, they need to take everything they can get, not just 5.
terrible but necessary for Dems to not unilaterally disarm.
Given current state law, it's almost impossible for New York to redistrict in time for 2026.
I'm sure we can think of something....
Maryland only gets you one more seat at most. On the other hand, if it ousts the head of the so-called “Freedom Caucus”…
There's also an outside WI can redraw based on an appeal process R's created in 2010. Not sure how likely it'd be since its never been done, but theres a sliver of a chance if it came to it
Indiana has reportedly said no to redrawing districts. Time will tell 🤷♀️
Forgot Ohio, Republicans there were doing it before Trump even asked.
Indiana needs to stay out of it because the only way out is for Independents to run for every race to siphon the votes off Republicans.
Sadly, the earliest NY could have new redistricting maps in place is 2028. spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-...
There might be a sliver of hope in Colorado too…as Maddow says watch this space.
I’ve been calling my state reps demanding they do something to gerrymander and fight for democracy. If not, somebody needs to primary them !!!
Great idea!
I didn’t hear any hope from polis. Maybe with Trump targeting Colorado now they will.
Sadly I think local media is also ignoring this as I did not see it covered much but here is what is happening: coloradonewsline.com/2025/08/13/c...
That’s promising, but it legislation. The interview I watched this week with BTC was very blah. Didn’t seem to grasp the immediacy. I don’t know what the situation is in CO, could be a legislative disaster like it is in Michigan where nothing makes it to the floor so it’s just sit and wait time.
DEM’s have a super-majority here, so it should pass. Governor Polis is term-limited next year and pretty well checked out. That said if this passes I don’t expect him to veto it.
I’m somewhat active in Tex Dem politics and at least in Texas, GOPers may have issues with some urban GOP districts they’ve had to bleed of GOPers. IE the margins, in this fraught year, might not hold. We have some sharp Dem candidates.
I’ve been listening to Mike Madrid and he is saying the Republicans are relying on a Latino vote that may not be there in their redistricting. This ICE thing is bad.
Yeah they're assuming the Trump-Latino swing will hold and that's a very risky assumption given current immigration policies, etc. I however, will not shed a single tear for them if the assumption bites them and turns the gerrymander into a dummymander 😆🤷♀️
Yep!!!!
Yes and I don’t get how they did not see this coming!
Latino vote in Texas is low in a good year; voter suppression is real in TX (I’ve talked to “voters” who don’t vote cuz-implied-voters live in mixed status houses. EG they were born in US, mom is undocumented). And everyone is talking about ICE. We have young population and lots of immigrants. 🤷🏻♀️
Ugh that is terrible. What if we flipped the script with a 'Familia Votes Together' day where whole communities show up together? Do y’all have early voting to make something like this happen? Also am I using y’all correctly? :)
I hope you’re right!
When I looked up # of registered voters in Tx it was 3m+ dems and 2m+ rep? If true why are all state wide and Sen offices held by republicans?🤷♀️
Texans don’t register by party. All those numbers are based on Extrapolating primary voters, who request the party ballot they want to vote. Maybe it happened but w/out looking it up, I don’t recall a year primary voting topped 20%. You can see the problem with that basic extrapolation.
Great insight-would be a great time to get some Data Scientists looking at any demographics that might be winnable…we are doing that here in Boebert’s district!
Where are we doing that, and how can I get involved?
Yep. I agree. Data is the key.
www.lonestarleft.com/p/which-texa...
Yep. I mostly agree with Michelle. The Fort Cavasos is particularly interesting. LOTS of poor areas. I tried to do voter registration in that general area a couple cycles ago. These are exactly the people most impacted by Abbott/patrick regime.
Check @samwang.bsky.social on this.
🎯
Very true.
Texass would lose a court battle, California would not.
I was (and remain) a strong supporter of California’s initiative to make redistricting fair and unbiased. But… … right now those are not the rules of the game and, at least temporarily, we have to fight fire with fire.
That's the same as saying the republicans are looking for a fight. So be it.
Utah defied the voter proposition for “better boundaries” and gerrymandered us into 4 GOP districts- our state Supreme Court said they couldn’t ignore the people and so we will see. Totally sucks
This whole fucking thing is terrible for the nation!
The GOP's red states are red states because they have already been gerrymandering for decades. Not sure how much more they'd be able to juice from them? I haven't studied it enough to argue with much certainly, but I hope more states are willing to fight against this unprecedented facist power grab
Do you disagree with what Newsom did?
A good conversation about this. Ds won't beat Rs gerry-4-gerry, but doesn't mean Ds can't get creative with the rulebook, as Newsom is doing. open.spotify.com/episode/4NDK...
It could dilute some red districts which may turn blue due to outrage….
Grrrr!!! Just let each person = one vote
Utah is already doing it, so yea it's most likely going national
Missouri too…they figure 2 more R seats.
@angrystaffer.bsky.social I *fundamentally* disagree. From the perspective of a random person, the gerrymandering is *drawing unusual attention*. If what makes people CARE about the battle for American Democracy ends up being fights over congressional maps, better than them waiting for massacres.
Though, a lot of the unusual attention is because @governor.ca.gov is drawing it in a way the overwhelming majority of "Democrats" refuse to even try. @gavinnewsom.bsky.social has proven himself more opportunist/ambitious than principled, but I would vote him for president without a better option.
Honestly, more a commentary on the corrupt and putrid "United" States than on that lazy and queerphobic politician. He experiences no real competition, because while 🩸Republikkkans go full KKK white trash fascist, Dems go "Let's *ALWAYS* listen to people who tell us not to do anything different!".
We are past the point of saving any political party. Now we are fighting against maga fascism’s tightening grip. Worry about what Dems to blame later.
"but I would vote him for president without a better option." I appreciate the idea of unity, but it is *fundamentally* NOT those of us who fight for Progress who are the problem. It's liars who tell everyone that expecting "electeds" to represent The People is the equivalent of voting Republican.
We need leaders who will fight back to defeat maga fascism. They won't all be perfect. But this allows a united effort to begin de-magafication around our country, deprogram & re-educate maga culties, and finally hold all traitors accountable for their crimes.
I guess I just fundamentally don't understand the perspective of "harmfully and willfully blind loyalists". I *LITERALLY* just said "I would vote him for PRESIDENT without a better option." How is calling for my government to represent me "expecting perfection"? MAGA-style loyalty fails Democracy.
I apologize if it seemed as if I was attacking you or anything. That was not my intention at all. I enjoy discussing different views and opinions with folks. I learn new info, gain different perspectives, and have mine challenged. Leads to a more informed opinion. So thank you!
We have to preserve and protect our right to have elections and vote first. Otherwise, voting for a president in 2028 won't even be an option.
I'm sorry. I get the impression we agree in principle, but there is miscommunication. The point *I* am trying to make is that we can *ALL* support the CURRENT "best" candidate without treating them like they can do "NO WRONG". Electeds work for US. We owe *THEM* nothing. Unless they serve US.
Lastly, if you are labeling those who are uniting to resist as “harmfully and willfully blind loyalists,” then you are in denial of how dangerous things are at this moment. Facts and evidence help fuel the resistance while justifying resisting.
I neither said nor suggested your calling for a government that represents you expecting perfection. I did say at this point during the maga regime there may not be a perfect candidate to vote for in 2028. Almost all will have flaws or some corruption.
I then explained how we must first unite to defeat maga fascism. Those willing to stand up to chump are more likely to emerge as leaders of a resistance. Those leaders are more likely to be voted for early on.
I understand and agree. But that's the step after breaking the grip maga fascism has on our country. The 2028 presidential candidates won't matter if we lose our right to vote before then. We need to focus on preserving our rights & freedoms and reclaiming ones we have lost.
We need to win power before any of that can happen. So yeah.
So true!
The corrupt Supreme Court has enabled and greenlit this ridiculous gerrymandering in 2019 in an overlooked case
Hope the lawsuits will drag it all out until after the election
You think Trump is going “scorched Earth” because he’s near the end?
Yes. The comment the other day about getting into Heaven wasn't something out of left field.
It's not Trump. He's not smart enough to plan this. This is planned and executed by those behind him in the shadows, to continue undemocratically after Trump goes.
He wants the Nobel pathetically bad and will commit any crime to get it.
