Just learned that Keith David's first actual film role (not as an extra) was in "The Thing," which is amazing given what a commanding presence he has in the film. I'd always assumed on watching it that he was already famous.

Mine too. It's arguably a perfect film, and the initial critical reaction to it is pretty bewildering and embarrassing in retrospect.
