I lost an elementary school Student Council race, largely because my campaign speech included the word "cooperate." I pronounced the first part cooper, as in barrel maker, and was laughed off the floor. Reading-only vocab for the win (or in my case, loss)!
In my early school years we were being tested one by one, reading words out loud. I pronounced “society” as “SO-shuh-tee” as in “social.” I was mortified when I heard someone else read it correctly 🤦🏼♀️
LOL! Why are English spelling rules so vague? (And yes, I pronounced that "va-GOO")!
