That’s not to say they’re not great or don’t provide great history. They certainly are great but full of critical interpretation, rather than an objective (but skilful and entertaining) weaving together of historical facts.

though oddly I think GMDF's own racism - which was considerable - sometimes makes the books *more* honest than most about Victorian racism. Very few other books - even ones where the British are the villains - show you just how common it was to use the n-word about Indians, f'instance.
