I said this in the 90s, but no one would listen. ;) Anyway, it's not that there was anything wrong with the X-Files per se -- at it's best, it was very entertaining. But it did kinda promote a certain way of seeing the world......

A photo of a NYT article from last Sunday (a week ago), looking at how the X-Files TV show promoted conspiratorial thinking (or at least brought it into the mainstream).

So the assassination attempts in the 60s that didn’t see proper justice had no role? Nixon getting pardoned for his BS had no role? COINTELPRO against the Black Panther movement had no role? I don’t think the issue was the XFiles. I think our racist government kinda made this all happen.

Our trusted institutions and supposed sources of truth actually lying to us may have also had something to do with it 🤔

I’ve loved the show but it has aged like milk on a hot day 😬

So much of what's going on today is modeled after cheezy plot devices.

💯 exactly. House of Cards seems to have taught a generation that politics is just a dirty game. West Wing tried to expose the nobility of the profession, but HoC implanted deep in the imaginations of the far right. Our media will continue to shape our culture... for better or worse.

I thought it parodied stuff that had been around for a long time - UFOs, Bigfoot, ancient astronauts, political conspiracies, etc., etc. That stuff was a big deal in the 1970s. (Maybe because of the real conspiracy of Watergate?)

I think mostly we are seeing the effects of Glen Beck, Alex dipshit and their ilk, not Scully and Mulder.
