It's predictable in the desert - unrelenting sun; high winds; little rain; fire danger; daily extreme temp swings. Yet people built Van Nuys housing here. So, short on insulation, and maintenance that's 10X harder because of the elements. Elders built thick-walled adobe for reasons! We ignore wisdom

It is ridiculous just how mal-adapted suburban housing is in less hospitable environments like deserts or mountains. Rented a house when I first moved here on top of a ridge. It was a single-story 3bed-2bath suburban house with utterly inadequate insulation for the high winds & badly oriented.

Live near the end of a dirt road in a canyon in the southern Sierra Nevada only 2 mountain ridges between my wife and my house and the Mojave Desert (the most beautiful desert in the world) We got a modest double-wide well-oriented to the sun & prevailing winds. Will upgrade to solar this year.

When one lives far from HOA-manicured McMansion neighborhoods, the domestic needs are reoriented to the natural world than human-driven requirements. It is not for everyone, but it sure as shit is absolutely my jam. Keep being awesome!
