Yes, because people overwhelmingly love it when movie adaptations aren't faithful to the book (?!?!?)

It's going to bamboozle all the audience members who have seen Boris Karloff's Frankenstein.
"My self-awareness can protect me against the weight of my own knowledge, but I'm afraid common viewers won't be able to see though the fog caused by so many past Frankensteins. I'm sorry, they can't."
I see this happen often among people who aren't even reviewers, movie-goers who let their assumptions about how other people will experience the movie detract from their own enjoyment or understanding of it. It's odd.
I'm not immune from it myself, although I try to stay aware and not let it influence my opinion of the movie. I don't know if this has always happened, but it feels like a side-effect of social media discourse.
It´s fascinating, it even affects me. Once you release something, 24 hours later you know the words and thoughts that will be repeated again and again. I hate to say I got used to "young people won't get this biopic", even if there were no examples at all!
Social media outrage is fueled by people who "get it" but willl antagonize you if they believe the vulgar masses don't.
I’m also not sure what version they’re even talking about where the monster is the Bad Guy as opposed to the doctor. Maybe a couple of the SEVEN Hammers? Even Whale didn’t do that. Warhol definitely didn’t
what he really means is "Halloween costumes"
I'm also side-eyeing "As he rolls his eyeballs, fidgets and jumps around, it’s very hard to muster much sympathy for him." and "The film lurches between scenes of lush romantic melodrama and moments of Grand Guignol bloodletting." Those don't sound like problems to me, but I guess we'll see.
I wasn't super interested in the movie, del Toro is a great director but just not my vibe, but that review changed my mind completely.
Yeah, I wasn't interested before, but if he's doing the Branagh Frankenstein with better effects and marketed to the proper audience, I'm 100% on board with that.
so in a sense, this is a successful review by a person with bad taste
ooooh i am v excited for this!!!
