I already knew the band - owned their first single edition of 1000, had seen them live. But the first time I heard them on WBCN it was like whoa what is happening. Then the jocks stopped hating on punks with dyed hair for 15 minutes.
Yes. Back then, I felt more kinship with ironic losers like the Replacements and Pavement, or scrappers like Superchunk and GBV. I side-eyed Nirvana: grandiose, self-serious. But I still remember the moment I heard “Teen Spirit” for the first time. I couldn’t even classify the subgenre.
