“Clear” the encampment…. Pointless, performative crap. The people don’t disappear. They keep “clearing” but never building. You build you way out of homelessness. Turns out people would rather blatantly waste money than give it to poor people. And we are all worse off because of it.
There's a significant portion of homeless that don't want to have a domicile. Let's be honest some due to addiction mental illness and the like would not be able to settle down in a home. What is the plan for tgat demo? No amount of dwelling building will address that group.
Until we stop enforcing homelessness as policy, esp in the working classes - and sometimes that looks like having to move every few months due to constant transitional housing, that attitude is pointless. WHEN we have enough houses for those who want them, then and only then do we look at the other.
One of the goals of transitional housing is job training and counseling most for a period up to 24 months. If after that period a person is still unable to achieve independent living then its a function of deeper underlying issues such as substance dependency/mental illness etc.
so we are back to my point that a significant segment is beyond the solution of building more housing. We need better support systems such as substance abuse treatments and a functioning mental health system in our nation.
