Also note that Australia and the USA original Chinese immigrants (pre 1980s) were all sze yip. Not sure about Canada

It’s impressive how these county level areas have produced heaps of migrants to SE Asia and the Anglosphere. My ancestors are from further east in Guangdong and Fujian.

Yeah it is. My grandmothers family are from south of Toishan, and about 60 years after they arrived in Australia and had settled in Broome, a person from their home village arrived Broome and our families are still close now.

I remember going to Chung Wha (which my great great grandfather started in Perth) events as a kid, and being told who spoke the same language as my grandfather (who was also of Sze Yip origin even though he was born in Hong Kong)

There was a lot of Chinese heritage immigration to Australia from SEA in between.

Imagine some guy getting run over in Perth today and they actually did something about road safety as a result

My wife’s family is seventh generation Anglo Western Australian, came out on the Parmelia etc. They discovered recently that about four generations back there was a Chinese-born sailor in the family tree. Still researching what they can but it’s interesting stuff.

Yeah, I think one can discover all sorts of interesting things like that if one does the research. The oral family histories we receive are usually distorted and shaped by what our ancestors wanted to pass down.

Indeed, I have relatives who's origins are from Singapore and Malaysia that have mixed in with the Sze Yip side. It is all quite amazing how it has blended and none were born in the PRC.

Fascinating how diaspora communities create rich cultural tapestries beyond geographic origins. Migration truly shapes identity in unexpected ways.
