I am completely taken aback and distraught about the shooting of schools children today. But I have question ….. in the country of user pay healthcare, who pays the hospital bill for the carnage today? Are the victim’s families stuck with a medical bill in addition to a dead child ?

Those who get shot pay for it. Their fault for surviving. (Snark)

First responsibility is Parents for the bill. If Parents have insurance for their kids, insurance will cover most of the bill. Parents can sue others for repayment (Shooter, school, gun manufacture) but success unclear...

Personal insurance. Suspects insurance if that's even a thing. Go fund me. And a court hearing that will dismiss any possible case against the weapons manufacturer. They are immune.

There will probably be a fundraiser or gofundmes for the families to help with costs. But it’s no way to run a society.

Yes. I live in the neighborhood and gofundmes have already begun circulating throughout the community to help support the victims. Just another blow after an unspeakable tragedy.

Apparently you will get charged for having your childs body transported away from the scene.

Medical bills, funeral costs...it never ends. None of their "insurance" is going to help, because those companies will pay their own lawyers 10x the value of a claim, to keeping from paying out on a claim.

That is exactly the case. Families' only recourse is lawsuits. No one is coming to the rescue.

That's why we need to force mandatory Insurance for every gun someone owns. Covering Hospitalization, Therapy physical & mental, burial, & financial responsibility if the wage earner is killed.

What an excellent idea. When you purchase a firearm you must purchase insurance in case you/your gun harms someone.

They probably cancel the kids insurance retroactive to their death at the scene, I would not put that past them.

I think so...a family friends daughter was hit head on by a garbage truck and a few weeks after the funeral the parents got the bills...ambulance, ER, and clean up...so disgusting

Short answer—yes, the family will be billed for whatever insurance doesn’t cover. And I don’t know if insurance even covers acts of violence. But hey, there’s always Go Fund Me accounts so they can beg. 🙁

I would imagine so, and honestly it will be an even bigger nightmare because the victim’s insurance company (assuming they have insurance), will look for a third party (ie the suspect, etc) to be responsible for those bills. Then, of course, the ever popular “go fund me” might be used.

It’s a sad sad day when the government doesn’t step in and say” don’t worry about that, we have you covered.” Of coarse I think the NRA should have to foot all the bills associated with gun violence.

And even more disgusting is that gun manufacturers are basically “protected” from lawsuits. The PLCAA/protection of lawful commerce in arms act in 2005 basically gave them immunity with “some” exceptions…money is way more important to amerikans than kids.

No, never. They’ve been sued up and back for financial misconduct and that made them weaker, but they’re still around. But your point is a good one: the victims and their families have to deal with all sorts of financial obligations on top of dealing with the shooting, grief and loss of loved ones.
