THE SHAPE OF WATER really wasn't Best Picture-caliber (imo), but no one complained because it snatched the prize away from THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI, which would've been like CRASH redux.

I think, of all the GDT pictures to get that nomination it's the most understandable for getting the win - it's a period piece, it's a romance, it's a creature feature but it's not horror...
Okay, but GDT's only had two movies nominated for Best Picture, and the other is NIGHTMARE ALLEY which checks off almost the same boxes.
However, Nightmare Alley is a remake and the inferior film, by almost any metric
