There was a plaque that explained this! It looked different under the lighting that was used for the performance

Edmund Trzcinski in STALAG 17 (1953) saying “I believe it!…I believe it.” (He recently received a letter from his wife back home: “Darling, you won't believe it, but I found the most adorable baby on our doorstep and I've decided to keep it for our very own. Now you won't believe it, but it's got exactly my eyes and nose.” and is convincing himself that it's true.)
