Birds are loving this shrub we added to the garden. Need to find more wildlife friendly shrubs.

A shrub with green spikey leaves and yellow flowering.

Ours still had bees on it in December and it is heaving with berries this year and the blackbirds are feasting on them.

Yes, this is mahonia. It will attract honeybees to its nectar rich flowers. Also, migratory cedar waxwings will devour berries in the spring. 🌱🦉

That's a mahonia, isn't it? I've planted two but they looked very unhappy (probably a combination of poor soil and terrible weather) and one died last year. Yours looks splendid! 🌱

Yes it is a mahonia. I find it's a bit of trial and error on what works in the garden. Luckily this has been a success 🎉

Mahonia (Oregon Grape) can be finicky when transplanted. It's super tough if it lands in a happy spot.

Another name for it is Oregon Grape. While it takes a lot of picked berries, squeeze the juice out through thin muslin cloth and make a dynamite Oregon Grape jelly.
