…Every wedding singer I hear now, I think about that and agree. It really is something how much EDM/4-to-the-floor sound is now de rigeur.

I feel like I saw something about how pretty much all live performance microphones have Autotune in them, which was interesting The guy in the article did mention how there are no more hashkafic issues re genre anymore, which fits with the EDM hype, which UGH I can't stand
Especially as someone whose favorite music (besides Broadway musicals) tends to be stuff where it really feels like the voice is an instrument, frum EDM so often has voices that clash with the music, and it's extremely frustrating to listen to
Part of it is the actual tone of the voice or whatever, but there's also this weird thing where the Hebrew/Yiddish, especially when done with "oys" or full-on chassidish, kind of feels rounder and clashes with more sharp EDM? IDK, I barely passed my Music I class in college, but it feels like that
As someone who remembers Very Frum People come down with the vapors when wedding bands started using lead electric guitars, this whole thing is really weird. There was also a period where acoustic-based wedding bands like Pey Daled were all the rage; I feel like I hallucinated that era…
I've seen acoustic chuppahs before but never bands for dancing or whatever! That just sounds like a lot... Wedding music is just weird in general- my sisters and I love catching all the random covers (like the band that played Music of the Night at the shmorg of my very yeshivish cousin's wedding)
I think the bands like to see what they can get away with… At one wedding we were at, the background songs included “Not While I’m Around” and “For Good.” The keyboardist looks over at The Lovely Wife(tm) and I belting along and goes “how do *you* know all the showtunes?”
I'm never sure if it's that or stuff they expect people to get- on the one hand I'm sure the random showtunes are just for fun, but I've been to weddings where during the meal the band played a whole set of Beatles covers and they HAVE to expect people to recognize those
Separately, pretty much EVERY frum star vocalist I've ever found on Youtube has sounded worse when I get their albums on Spotify Zanvil Weinberger has an incredible voice but he sounds like any random dude on his albums despite having more vocals-forward chassidish music, IDK why, not fair to him
