There’s this story that says a lot. When armed forces go somewhere, they occasionally have the “Ambassador search”: a one hour, when rehearsed “Here’s what you need to know about the place here” from an expert. It’s to-the-point, effective and explains enough you aren’t completely out of the water.

A friend of mine happened to have heard a lot of those, from different countries and he told me the French and the American ones always end with the same sentence: “Be safe out there”. But it means slightly different things. For the US, it means: Don’t leave the wire without a helmet, plates, etc.

For French troops, it means: For the life of all that is holy, wear a f—king condom, because of if I have one more angry father barging into my office demanding that I officiate a literal shotgun wedding one more time… The ability to emphasize with locals aren’t evenly distributed.
