Oh it was! People who aren't taught critical thinking skills and who are uneducated in terms of history, scientific reasoning, etc. are MUCH MUCH easier to manipulate. That's why the GOP / the evangelical right have had a grassroots effort to eliminate teaching those things for several decades now.
