I should be clear: these people don't "hate" immigrants. That would "make them racist like trump supporters" They love taco trucks and nannies and low paid home care workers and vegetable pickets. They just don't think they can be Americans. And they don't understand why you Brits are pretending
So much of what's wrong with America is pinned on conservatives but it really lets liberals off the hook for retreating from the public sphere by basically saying "all those racist people are right, but they should be quieter and nicer"
But this guy is a good main character because it shows exactly what the dominant characteristic of WALs is: smug ignorance If you wanna know how these people lost to trump twice, it's very obvious
