We don't know for sure yet, but it is likely that a background check law that requires a mental health screening or a gun locker/safe storage requirement would have done the trick, since he was a transient who had many run-ins with police and was living out of his car.

I'm so sorry your wife had to experience something so traumatic and I'm glad she was able to fend off her attacker. To be clear, gun control is not about banning guns. I'm sure your wife would have passed background checks and been able to own a gun in any state in the country.

Maybe, but the whole thing is weird. Firemen literally risk their lives to save others lives and property without the bullying that some police do AND many of them do it for free. It just doesn't make sense to me.
