I take the train from Chicago to Detroit to see family maybe 2x a year and it is almost always great. However, when it goes wrong, it goes catastrophically wrong (in the sense that I've gotten home at like 3am more than once).

Is this an advert for train travel or for a monster truck show? 🤔
Whenever people attempt to outrun a train or stop at a level crossing it sure turns into a budget car-crushing segment.
These people think they can play the odds...with their and other's lives.
It takes a locomotive at 30 mph about two seconds to pass through a grade crossing… whether you car is there or not.

City of New Orleans fan club rise up!
Who dat say they gonna ride that train?
This is awesome!
This is fabulous 🌟
As a visiting Brit, I have LOVED all my trips on Amtrak: good food, amazing scenery & terrific staff. Plus the chance to make friends even on shorter overnight journeys such as Coast Starlight Express. When the 🍊horror is no longer making USA an unattractive destination, I hope to do more 🚂trips.
I see Union Station in Portland OR ❤️❤️❤️
Heading up there next week ON THE TRAIN!!!
Excellent marketing. Has Amtrak ever considered fucking armrests and window shades? I love Amtrak but come on America, we can do better: true high speed rail, actual schedules you can count on, more frequent trains.
The Republicans won’t fund it.
drumpf has loudly decried any money for rail. Because, rail WAS a Biden thing.
Even before him. Republicans just don’t care about projects that help the people. They want that money for themselves.
Wish I could share this with everybody I know.

Outstanding!

Hit a millennial nostalgia button I didn’t know I had.
Okay but this fucking rules.
This is great
I should not allowed to become a dictator of America or I might force Amtrak to rename some of their trains to match this add.
Genuinely would take the train everywhere if they could get some faster ones T-T Even a city train would be so nice. But we can't even get sidewalks to the end of the road, so..
Amtrak’s marketing team hired Terry Gilliam
I wish amtrack could get me from point A to point B in a single leg faster than if I did it in a car. But alas, even that is about 20% slower which is kind of impressive
AMTRAK MADE THIS?

Yeah well they just changed my leg of the Empire Builder to a bus (PDX to Spokane) two days after I booked a nonrefundable ticket dammit

This would be really funny if their new trains didn’t look really uncomfortable to ride
I regularly debate with myself about how to do the Friday, Friday, Friday in plain text... Friday, FRIday, Fridayyyy is the best I've come up with but I need to test it with a screen reader.
It's like one of those train VHS commercials
TBF train travel is friggin sweet unless it's running late and you gotta hang out in SLC at ass o clock waiting for the train to show tf up
Woahhh! I wanna Amtrak! But I can't because I live in London.
Trust me, your train systems in the UK are light years better than Amtrak. I took the trains up in Manchester, travelled down to Euston, went to St. Pancras to hop on a Eurostar & it was on time every step of the way. With the exception of the NE corridor, all trains are slow here.
Interesting...although I think you definitely got lucky there!

You gotta move to a city with trains, bud
Madison is supposed get one in like 5 years.
Many miles of Amtrak travel in the U.S. The seats are roomy and comfortable and can easily be slept in. The food is okay but expensive. Sitting up in the observation car is like watching a National Geographic travelogue. The staff and other travelers are pleasant and interesting. You can’t go wrong!
Hell yeah 🔥🔥🔥

I passed on going to FL with daughter earlier this month, it was our delayed trip from Oct(Hurricane rolled in). Yea, I’ll let that $600 ticket expire cause flying ain’t safe. And don’t dare tell me I’m more likely to have a car accident than a plane accident, nope. Train looks fun tho🙂
Ok that's a good ad

Trainsgender is also a valid gender!
One time when my kid was 4 he picked up a button that said TRANS and said “I want this” and I said oh ok well sure but let’s talk about what that means! And after a few minutes of me SWEATING through a conversation in the bookstore I asked, hey what do you think that says? And he replied, “Trains?”
That’s hilarious 😂
It’s honestly my favorite story. So pure and sweet
I have since gotten better at explaining gender identity I swear
That's cute! He sounds like a sweet kid. I'm really happy that you didn't just yell at him and not give him an explanation why. I appreciate you actually trying to get him to understand what Trans means. I'm AFAB Nonbinary with hopes to start HRT, so I want to thank you for being a good parent!
Ahh thanks. In the moment I was embarrassed that I wasn’t better prepared to talk about it with him, honestly, but we’ve since had several conversations (and he has one friend who has socially transitioned) and it’s great seeing how open kids are to learning this stuff and accepting it
And hey best of luck with HRT! I hope it works well and is easy for you to get the care you deserve 🩷
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The world needs more people and parents like you, especially now!
Cute story, I so love. But as parents we need to be better prepared for these situations. Then when they get old enough to express themselves, they can start transitioning to what they truly are inside.
He asked me recently how doctors know if a baby is a boy or a girl when it’s born and it was a great opportunity to have the conversation again
I’m curious, how you approached that? Not exactly like they express much at that time, other when they are hungry, tired, or not feeling good cause they are teething. And even then it is a guess what they are trying to say.
I think I said something about well most of the time people assign those labels based on the private parts the baby has. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s how that person will feel in their heart, so it’s complicated, and please wash your hands before you eat that
I really loved that he wanted a button that theoretically just said the word TRAINS with a pretty pink and blue background
Hey, the kid loves his team.
When I was a kid I wanted to be a train driver cos I really liked trains. Oh well I was close.

Hip marketing won't save the Coast Starlate... bsky.app/profile/dana... (I've ridden it and experienced delays, drunken passenger kickoffs, cell phone theft, etc.)
TBH. I love trains. All kinds of trains. Model trains, passenger trains, freight trains. On a snowy Sunday afternoon last winter, I watched about 3 hours of train videos on You Tube. When I went to England for work, took two trains from Manchester airport to Hull and it was great!
Don't like the angry-sounding music...it's not the marketing that works with me. Luckily I have a lot of past experience.
@maryhartmanx2.bsky.social
This reminds me of a comedian, some number of years ago who had a bit about how churches should use NASCAR advertising. “Sunday, Sunday, SUNDAY!!! Watch the priest from the east battle, the thunder from down under! Only at First Christian United. DON’T BE LATE…”
I wish trains in America were good. I so desperately want to be able to take the train. I've taken one train ride in the past 10 years and it was bad. From [CLASSIFIED] to Chicago, local train platform looked like shit, it was 3 hours late, and the boarding window was like, 30 seconds.
Plus rampaging kids, 24 hour delays... the issue being zero infrastructure dedicated exclusively to passenger rail.
The one I rode had obnoxious Amish people who woke up extremely early and wouldn't stop talking very loudly in Dutch! :)
At least it's a good story
That's friggin awesome!!!

But not emphasizing enough how seldom they fall out of the sky & burn all passengers alive. It’s a big advantage over flying.

They're actually pretty cool. Just rode from Indianapolis to Spokane on Amtrak a couple months back, it's expensive, pack snacks, but it's worth it. The crew were really nice people, and the observation car is the BEST part. I watched the sun rise with my coffee there, ate dinner there... Lovely.
I went from New York to Seattle. So relaxing. It’s pricey, but worth it. Bring a blanket!!! It was so cold at night. ✌️

I took the City of New Orleans train from Chicago to New Orleans just to do it — Willie Nelson convinced me — and it was delightful. The cafe car is an atrium. It obv. took much longer but I had a roomette and Internet (mostly). It was better than sitting in a cubicle or office or whatever.
I'm doing this trip in October and your post made me even more excited about it!
I just took a round trip in May, from AZ to Ohio, and it was the best trip ever. I've done it before, but I'm making sure I get a roomette every time. It's worth the extra. Buy tickets as early as possible, and get their rewards account. It's worth it.
I'm doing the roomette too! I wanted to do the fully private room, but that was just so much more expensive and I figured i could just save that money to spend on food or excursions.
The roomette is small, no bathroom, but perfect for 1 or 2 people. And private. The top bunk folds down to use, and below there is a table and seats that turn into a bunk too. We had room to stash our stuff safely, and had the run of the train! Buy tickets early. They're much cheaper.
Oh I already bought my tickets for October. I'm so excited for this trip. And I'm glad other people are sharing their experiences so I'm not going in clueless (like tremendously too bring cash to tip attendants).
Twos. Buy a pack of twos from the bank. Hilarity will ensue. 🤪
No. I'm not one of THOSE people.
I am. ✌️🤪
Weird.....the roomette's I've stayed with Amtrak had the toilet right next to the bed and the only privacy you had at doing your business was a cheap curtain blocking viewers who were walking down the center of the cars. 🤣
Probably depends on which line. My experience was on the Capitol line, but I was recently on southwest chief and I didn’t get a roommate but it’s a double decker kind of train and it my have been bigger with some facilities. I’ll have one one my next trip.
If it one person I definitely prefer the roomette over the bedroom.
It is one person. But I'm fat, so I'm always nervous about being comfortable.
I'm your average sized guy so can't speak for you then. The roomette could be tight then. Have fun on the trip whatever you choose.
Amtrak will give you a chance to bid on an upgrade once you are booked. Get registered on their reward program. Add the app to your phone. Took Amtrak from D.C. to Chicago last year's Dem convention. Bid on full room for return trip back (ALWAYS low ball them!). Paid $41.00 for upgrade to full size!
Oh that's great to know!
2/2 Even when I travel to D.C. coach, I get emails from Amtrak (make sure you download app and sign up for rewards!) to bid for upgrades to Business Car. ALWAYS low ball your bid!🥰
1/2 Yep. I had a roomette from D.C. to Chicago. They're kinda tight but if'n its just one person, it's not bad. With roomette and bigger cabins you have meals and access to bathrooms including a really large shower room with super hot water! (More👉)
They give you meals in the roomettes. It’s like “business” class flights, I guess? You share a bathroom but you get a bed and food. The private rooms have a bathroom but I’m not afraid of the regular restroom; it’s afraid of me.
I figured it's like a dorm setup with shared bathrooms. So I'm not worried. But also lololol at the bathroom comment because so true.
You have to listen to the song (Arlo Guthrie version to start, then whatever floats your boat) at least 25 times as you go! The scenery was remarkably similar to his lyrics when I did it ten years ago. Don’t forget a meal in the dining car. Befriend a few strangers!
I did the Chicago to Colorado trip and it did not go well. Five hours delay, grungy train bathroom. We had to bail on the train early missing the scenic section we’d specifically wanted to see (would have been night by then anyway). I wanted so bad to love it and it was so disappointing.
I think you mean the City of New Orleans* * the City of New Orleans
What
In the video, they have footnotes for the funny names they give the trains. Then they footnote the City of New Orleans with its own name. My favorite bit of the video.

I used to play that song when I was learning chords on guitar. Legitimately great. Always felt nice to play and sing. I found it in some song book in the music class at school and didn't care it was old, it was nice
I did that trip about 12 years ago and it's great. About an 18hr ride. I later did Chicago to Flagstaff which was 30hr. That was a bit much. But plenty of time to read and relax and get into the vacation mindset. Plus New Orleans is an incredible destination. It's on my travel short list again.
My mom rode by train from Chicago to Williams and then on to the Grand canyon in 1946 to become a Harvey Girl at the Bright Angel Lodge. A private company now runs the train from Williams to the Grand Canyon. We took my mom when she was 85, it was a great trip recalling memories and making more.🚂❤️
SHOULD have been ARLO that drove you.
Or Steve Goodman, who actually sang it first AND wrote it. But yes, Arlo.

Definitely at least matches the USian spirit of their janky assed ancient lumbering trains I guess.
so the thing is, yes, united states trains are some of the worst trains on earth, and also, are the best mode of transit in the united states
Yes, US passenger service is a national embarrassment. Having traveled 1000s of miles on trains in India I must contest your assertion that US trains are 'among the worst trains on earth.' Third class on Indian Railways is genuine punishment for the sun of being poor.
oh yeah fair nuff i grant my experience is limited
∧
Is that where you sit on top of the train?
Not having been on trains in other countries doesn't make the person who has ridden Amtrak any less miserable. 😉
But having flown makes someonewho has ridden amtrak appreciative
Having flown and ridden Amtrak makes someone who has ridden Shinkansen and TGV appreciative

coz like you are right but i tell you i'd rather be donkin around on an amtrack for 20 hours than go through the whole ordeal of taking a 3 hour flight
When I went to China last month, HSR was unambiguously my #1 favourite thing about the country
Irish trains would definitely rattle in behind them.
Have never seen a better ad !
Cool. The last time I took Amtrak, they didn't have enough seats and I had to ride perched on a stool in the snack car. One the way down, a strip of metal that could've been used as a shiv fell out of a curtain. It was great.
a strip of metal fell from the sky at the airport too but it was a plane
@travisclones.bsky.social
I would have razzed on luggage charges and having to arrive 2 hours early too.
Very cool 🆒
I’ve rode up the Northeastern Corridor and I will say that it feels good to sit down on a train.
Yooooo thats a pretty cool how they did the retro style
pretty brilliant tho still has the slant of marketing because it is marketing
I’m literally on a train as I’m reading this. Almost to Chicago on the California Zephyr. It’s been great.
Ooh! We've traveled to Chicago and New York and DC and it's always been great. Decent food too! Hope you enjoyed the scenery!
Fantastic!
They should be honest and show the part where the train stops and everyone has to shuffle onto buses for the rest of the journey.
Do you fly some kind of special airline that drops you right into your living room?
No, but if I book amtrak for my next trip, I have almost 7 hours of bus and THEN 7 hours of actual amtrak train. If I fly I just have a few hours of flight and maybe a 20 minute drive (uber or pickup etc.) Amtrak is good if it’s where you are, but doesn’t have the kind of reach airports have.
Exactly. I love the train! Just so many times the train trip is actually partly on a coach bus and it shouldn’t be that way. Especially if they have smart advertising that makes fun (rightfully!) of going by highway. 🤷♂️
If the train is not an alternative for you, you probably weren't part of the target audience for the commercial. Point is, if you aren't driving door to door, every public or commercial mode of transportation requires you to use something other than that mode of transport to complete the journey.
Obviously lol. But there’s a big difference between that additional method being like, 1/20th of the travel time, versus HALF of it. And Amtrak is not a local entity. No matter where they are you can *buy* transport affiliated with them… even if they aren’t the transport themselves.
That wasn’t anyone’s point but please go on. Amtrak uses buses in place of trains enough that it’s detrimental to their product. Here’s a view of the last half of my “train” trip last week from Boston to Portland.
"Amtrak trips ending on buses are relatively infrequent and usually occur due to unforeseen circumstances like track obstructions or equipment malfunctions." There are similar complications with flying. Are airline ads being dishonest when they don't talk about equipment or weather delays?
And yet he persisted. When was the last time your plane ride became a bus ride? I love the train. I love riding trains. Amtrak frequently has segments of train travel on buses. It’s a bummer.
Better than having a plane ride that becomes an extra night in a hotel room, or the floor of the airport. I've had plane rides that became rental car rides. If the bus portion of a trip is a planned segment, and that's a deal breaker, then don't book it. Problem solved.
It’s actually not a deal breaker for me, I have done trips exclusively greyhound before! But it’s still disappointing to have to do the awkward transfer from bus to train or vice versa. I honestly just thought it was odd for literally no one else to have been like “yeah that part kinda sucks.”
I also actually like the ad and would love if more people used amtrak to the point they decided to expand and not need buses as part of the pipeline. But I thought it was still a funny jab at a true experience.
Ok you are correct and a winner! 🙇
No

Union Pacific wishes they could market like this for freight
I enjoyed the Toledo Ohio to Downtown LA train route I took years ago. Great way to see the US if you're not in a rush. Highly recommend getting your own Roomette when you book.
Just took the train a couple of weeks ago. They redid all the cars, no longer two levels, new snack area with baskets of free sodas, monsters, bags of chips and cookies. I was pretty impressed.
They let the interns at it and they ate. Of course.
That's real? It's ... so us.
"You'll only need the seat's edge!"
18" of seat BUT YOU'LL ONLY NEED THE EDGE. Where has this marketing campaign been all my life?

right, that was perfect 😂
i could swear I've seen one like this but it's CHURCH, and there was one line that said like "come by to susie's diner after and have some delicious BUTTERMILK PANCAKES" if anyone's got that saved please share it's been years since I've seen it
Whoever their ad agency is, it seems like a fantastic place to work.
@milesintransit.com just want to make sure you saw this
I’d take it if there was a straight run across the southern US, but going from California to Florida via Chicago is a bit ridiculous.
Uh that’s not a thing. The only detour is east of New Orleans where you have to angle up to Atlanta then back down again to get to Florida. Aside from that there’s a straight shot from New Orleans to LA
I’ll go look at routes again, but LA to Chicago, then points east, seemed to be the standard.
Chicago is a big hub and a lot of them run through it but I know there’s a California to New Orleans line that runs through Texas and New Mexico
If I could, I’d take the train to Ireland.
Fuck yeah trains!
There's plenty of room to criticize Amtrak, but I love train travel; I'll take it over planes or cars any day. Just watching that scenery roll by as the rhythmic clickity-clack lulls you into a pseudo-meditative state...that's my idea of a vacation. Doesn't even matter where I'm going.
California High Speed Rail seems to be in the same mood: youtu.be/Uor-oJOfOcQ?...
