Are you old enough to have been taught about "manifest destiny" in public school? We were in 7th or 8th grade social studies when introduced to this, and I didn't understand it, growing up in a major liberal university town. Pretty shocking when I left for elsewhere in the country.

I learned more about it from Lakota members as an adult. Grandma & Mom taught me some native history, culture, and such as a child.

I remember seeing a t-shirt with "Who are you calling an immigrant, Pilgrim?" on it. So true. They have some nerve claiming anyone else are the immigrants.

Early US leaders were influenced by Indigenous governance systems, especially those of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. A central tenet was The Great Law of Peace, a constitution outlining checks and balances, consensus building, and federal union among sovereign nations. What went so horribly wrong?

The US constitution is somewhat based on that Haudenosaunee constitution. I don't know what happened, besides rich white men gaining powerful governmental positions. Part of the problem is the electoral college, we haven't changed it since it was created when there were only 12 million people here.

I live on Haudenosaunee land and they have an amazing cultural center. The good of the people outweighed any individual. Plus it was matriarch society. Greed is killing our society 😞

The hegemony of the settler mindset has always been contentious, all over Turtle Island. While your Canadian friends and relations are confused by the US Electoral College system, our Parliamentary Democracy could probably benefit from some reforms as well. Treaties add another layer of complexity.
