They're in the pockets of the oil and gas companies, who are worried that their monopoly on energy production is being eroded and, with it, their profits. A gas powered power station needs to buy gas forever, whereas, once built, a wind turbine just needs maintenance; the fuel is free.

The framing of this is the main problem for me. Realistically, we've got a period where we're going to have to rely (at least to an extent) on fossil fuels. The more that fuel is produced locally, the lower its carbon footprint. None of this means that we should slow transition to renewables.

Same reason the Greens systematically oppose renewables projects: Politics. First past the post + small constituencies inevitably leads to elected politicians supporting whatever will keep them in their job, which is seldom in the national interest.

It's not just abour fossil fuels. For the Tories the attitude is more generally about corporations profiting. They want people locked in to high bills that can be profited from regardless of the industry.

These days nuclear gets rightly mocked because it's 3 times as expenseive as renewable and takes much much longer to build. Also the gap is widening. Only a fool would invest in nuclear today. 20 years ago you'd have had soemthing of a point.

Please do take a moment to complain to BBC. 👇 BBC does have to report on complaints , and “what gets measured gets done” 😀 Without complaints in numbers nothing will have a chance of change. It only takes a couple of minutes & is well worth your time 🙏😊 www.bbc.co.uk/contact/comp...

Fingers crossed 🤞😊I think they have to be reviewed as part of BBC charter (I cld be wrong). I see people on Bluesky being justly annoyed by bias & failures of lobby journalists to hold Farage etc to account, & feel if everyone complained to BBC & Ofcom too, then maybe it cld get cut through! 😸

UK oil and gas is sold on international markets, traded by guess who, commodities houses just like Nigel Farage spent his career in. UK gas is traded an average of 17 times between extraction and usage, lots of yummy profits there. You can't trade free sunshine and wind though.

Tories announce this on a day that over 70% of our supply is renewable. Only 8% gas which, unfortunately, sets the price for our electricity because it’s the most expensive.

Alec Burrett @alecjburrett.bsky.social

Except the wholesale price of electricity in GB today is dirt cheap. This is due to constraint payments to renewables and subsidy payments to gas fired power stations. On days like this the price of energy is always cheap. It's the marginal price which sets the cost of electricity, not gas.

Price per MWh graph of GB electricity price over the last 24 hours. It is close to zero for most of the period, with slight spikes at dusk and dawn.

The BBC would say, "But David Attenborough documentaries prove we tell both sides." Those most likely to watch Sir David aren't the gullible ones. Lies need to be called out at source, not through a third party at a different time and on another channel. That's like the Mirror correcting the Express
