But that to the side, yeah the way some people (mostly fans) act about a handful of white dudes who wrote SF back in the 1940's and 1950's is just plain pathetic. Heinlein, Asimov, Campbell, etc have almost nothing to do with modern SF beyond some history that only historians need bother with.

Hell, Campbell had a massive NEGATIVE impact on the so-called Golden Age in that he was a major gatekeeper since he edited the then biggest SF magazine and he used that position to promote his white supremacist, misogynist, and generally xenophobic bullshit.

The way some fandoms get oddly insular and start freaking out when people haven't read the same stuff they have is just plain weird though. I personally love Pratchett, but I'm damn sure not going to say everyone must or should read him. Or even know who he is.
