That’s not to say that there aren’t terrible lyrics across all genres of music. Of course there are. But music is an art form, and great performers (like Cash) are also great actors - they are believable in all their darkness, but also their humanity
Any good art gets to some truth in the human condition. Sometimes it’s autobiography and other times it’s acting; we need to be careful to distinguish the two. But if it was only wholesome stuff it would be dull. This goes for literature, movies etc too (ironically, I can’t watch violence on screen)
