People say, “if you’re not using AI to write, you’ll be left behind!” meanwhile study after study has shown severe and immediate cognitive decline in those who use it regularly. I’m still capable of reading and have a functioning brain, so who’s really being left behind here?

Left behind what? Ghostwriters?

There's a guy in my friend group. Let's call him John. John keeps saying we have to embrace AI. My husband was talking to him one night and the topic got heated. Enough that I was able to make out John's side of the argument.

John was in support of AI taking over all the entry level jobs. My husband explained that that's how people gain experience, climbing the ladder with said experience to then eventually become senior level positions in companies like John. John could not understand. Don't be like John.

I don't even understand what they mean by "being left behind" in this context. Your writing ability is like a muscle that needs regular exercise, so obviously if you leave all your writing to AI your performance will suffer from lack of practice.

I had to substantially rewrite something someone submitted who had used AI. The word predictor (AI) tho’ wordy, had framed things in a way to make them less than accurate. It would’ve been easier (and faster) to have given me a reasonable attempt and just let me tweak to polish. Sigh.

Yeah like there’s no question it can make things easy. The point is that you then become incompetent without it.

I mostly use AI like Grammarly to correct spelling mistakes and make sentences less wordy.

On my masters course a tutor suggested I was sometimes 'verbose'. He was probably correct. But since you raise the issue, do you not think you (or anyone) can practise and reflect in order to improve? That was my route, though it did mean constantly revising texts. But ... it's now my skill.

grammarly unfortunately is trained on other peoples writing instead of proper grammar!

I’ve damaged my brain enough with all the glowing rectangles. I don’t need to add to it while also destroying the environment.

I guess this is true if the goal is to produce an inhuman amount of slop Eg. weekly "titles" for self-publication. But that's kind of like saying that chefs that cook the food from scratch will be left behind compared to ones that just serve still-frozen chicken nuggets.

YES oh I love that chef example. "Oh you're a chef? But you're not cooking frozen burritos in the microwave? You're making them from? Scratch? You're going to get left behind!" Yeah… I think my restaurant will still be going in 5 years. Your burrito truck though uh…I don't see much future.
